A new merged NRL competition

I always liked the idea of 20 teams and I think it'll happen once it becomes viable... Perth, Central Coast and Wellington are must haves!

I'd like to see teams in Perth, CC, Wellington and Adelaide. It's just not possible right now, and if it happens don't do it all at once like in 1995. The scramble for players would be ridiculous.

However these teams can't be brought in at the expense of established teams (unless those teams go bust through their own doing). Sure it's nice to think that merging 2 teams will double their fan base, but in reality at least half of those fans will just throw up a collective middle finger and go find some other team/sport to support. NSW is where league dominates, so why would you go and disenchant the fans of 8 or so clubs? Goodbye to millions of dollars in ticket sales, merchandising, tv ratings go down making the rights less valuable etc. Sure it's a great idea, if the NRL wants to commit suicide.

Looking at the current comp in its form I think there is a need to reduce the number of Sydney clubs. I propose the following:

Penrith Panthers and Parramatta Eels merge to become the Parramatta Panthers playing out of Parramatta Stadium

St.George Dragons and Cronulla Sharks merge to become the St.George Sharks playing out of Kogarah

Manly Sea Eagles look to claim the entire north shore as their own renaming themselves to Northern Eagles again and base themselves at a redeveloped North Sydney oval converted to a stadium

Next best thing would be a merger between Canterbury Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs but without a name to appease both sides they might have to standalone

Wests Tigers having already merged remain the same club

Sydney Roosters remain the same club

Therefore competition is reduced by 2 teams and consists of the following

Brisbane Broncos
Canberra Raiders
Canterbury Bulldogs
Melbourne Storm
Northern Eagles
North Queensland Cowboys
NZ Warriors
Parramatta Panthers
St.George Sharks
South Sydney Rabbitohs
Sydney Roosters
Wests Tigers

leaving room for a Perth and Adelaide team to be added in the future if it becomes feasible

Northern eagles, been there done that wont happen again

try again

Hhe. This thread is funny. Good joke NRL_man, thats funny.

Relegation-no go. The 2ns teir would be like premmy now and would get poor crowds and attendance.

The 20 teams-maybe in 2020, but not in the near future.

The comp is fine now, no need for drastic radical changes. The only reason to merge clubs is if they are not financially viable, not coz u feel like it!

If you were creating a competition from scratch in Australia/NZ, where would you put teams and how many would you put where?

You all think of Sydney as the heartland but QLD is a heartland as well and surely would merit at least a half of the teams that NSW has. Then you would need to recognize the development potential and existing love of RL in New Zealand. And then you would need to put teams in other states to develop the game. A good idea would be to relocate some of the Sydney teams to other states like the AFL did with the Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears merger.

I would suggest

2 NZ teams - Auckland, other

3 QLD teams - Brisbane, Gold Coast, North QLD

6 NSW teams - Newcastle, Central Coast, Woolongong, 3 Sydney teams

Western Australia

South Australia

Tassie?

You can't think fully of club loyalties when building a competition. You have to think of what the best competition would be and how to expand the game.

Brisbane has nothing on Sydney's RL culture, and theres more corporate money to be had in Sydney. At best, QLD could have Half of NSW teams, not 'atleast half.'

An eye towards Ipswich and Redcliffe imo in the next 15 years has to be seriously considered if we want to consolidate the city.
