A player you thought was a diamond but ended up a rock

Brett Howland - I never expected him to be an out and out Superstar but for a team that struggled to score any points I thought his speed and finishing would help improve the Dogs spark in attack when he came.

He was honestly lucky to get a run in the NSW Cup team

Don't get me started on this bloke.. anyone who can score tries like this and just walk away from the game makes me shake my head.

Vidot is such an enigma. He can be brilliant one second and a liability the next.

I can't believe you threw rhys wesser in there pete.
No bluddy way mate.

I got carried away...

He was my favourite non-Bronco in 2003 and couldn't wait to see him in the Maroon in 2004.

By Game II I couldn't wait to see the back of him.

He never reached those heights again and was mud from 2007 on.

He doesn't fit this thread but that is a fair assessment of him really.

Throw Nathan Gardner in. After that try against the Roosters you'd think he was building to a good career at the Sharks.

He's borderline for mine. He definitely had talent but I always felt his lack of size was eventually going to hurt him.

Also I think it's been said by a couple, but Denan Kemp fits nicely into this description. Loved watching him in 08, but he kinda fell off the radar after moving to the Warriors.

The sad thing about Denan is that his return game for Brisbane was amazing. It was like 2008 all over again with a fantastic try at the death to put the Cowboys away.

But then he suffered a punctured lung against the Warriors two games later and was never the same.

You're right, I'm looking for the least valuable players thread.

I still stand by my initial pick. I thought the future was assured with Dave Taylor up-front and he may have lived up to a fifth of most people's expectations.

Oh I agree with Taylor, first time I watched him I thought he would be the best forward in the game one day.

Can anybody compete with Dave Taylor?

Should have been the forward of his generation, ended up being a punch-line.

Here's a few others that failed to live up to the hype
Gerard Beale
Greg Eastwood
Ash Harrison

All had "solid" careers but if you listened to the early wraps you'd think they'd be stars of the game.

Looking at other clubs...

Jarrod Mullen
Terry Campese
Joel Monaghan
Roy Asotasi
Chris Houston
Travis Burns
Justin Poore
John Morris
Matt Utai
Ty Williams
John Williams
Tariq Sims
Shannon Walker
Chris Sandow
Shaun Fensom
Aiden Tolman
Feleti Mateo
John Sutton
Adam Dykes
Josh Hannay
Tyrone Roberts
Luke MacDougall
Matt Duffie
Kalifa Fai Fai Loa
Rhys Wesser
Luke Rooney
Trent Waterhouse
Joel Clinton
Mark McLinden

Not necessarily bad players, in fact some had awesome spurts in form. But they lost their way and didn't have the careers expected of them.

Not sure you understand the thread. Most of those players ended up exactly where people thought they would.

As I said, a lot of them belong on a 'least valuable list'. For me, when you sink the amount of money into a player and they don't deliver I consider them a drain on a side's salary cap - making them a 'rock' if you will.

Even so, I've never cared about what 'most' people think. I'm not here to represent most people and those were all players who I thought would go onto do bigger and better things and more often than not they just ended up being club players at best.

Not necessarily me but alot of others, Des Hasler included thought Michael Lichaa was the next superstar. I don't think that will ever be the case.

I've got a player that may be on this list by years end. May sound crazy now but damien cook may be headed this way.
He played a handful of good games at the back end of 2015, but I always thought it was strange a guy could get to age 24 without establishing Himself in 1st grade. Other souths fans heralded his signing, but I thought it was weird that bulldogs and other clubs didn't put up much of a fight for his signature. He was going to be dominant, we wouldn't feel the loss of Luke, he might be a blues bolter, a better signing then sam burgess, the new interchange rules will suit him, these were just some of the comments being spewed out by other souths supporters. In the 5 games so far he as been totally anonymous, and has beem easily outplayed by cam mcinnes (a solid first grader at best so far), and with coaches getting their heads around the new interchange, souths might be finding it hard to justify a hooker who isn't offering much of the bench.
