Well its on in earnest as of tonight, people!

Crowds will get away to a flyer, but it will still be difficult to break the round 1 attendance record of 364564 (set in 2007).

Its always hard to get an accurate guage on where sides are at in the opening rounds, but I'd run with:

RICHMOND vs Carlton by 50pts;
Hawthorn vs GEELONG by 26pts;
COLLINGWOOD vs Adelaide by 35pts;
BRISBANE vs West Coast by 42pts;
ST KILDA vs Sydney by 20pts;
Melbourne vs NORTH MELBOURNE by 48 pts;
PORT ADELAIDE vs Essendon by 30pts; and
Fremantle vs WESTERN BULLDOGS by 15pts.

imagine if we could kick straight

Imagine if we had a full strength side...

Good showing by Geelong who are pretty much at full strength (but for Harley) and at the top of their game at the moment.

Were able to exploit a badly underdone Hawthorn defence during the opening three quarters, but were almost made to pay for their prolifigacy during a frenetic final term.

Across the night I could only class five of the Hawk boys as playing better than average, while you'd probably be struggling to find five poorly performing Cat players. We were only just clinging on at three quarter time and I expected a blow-out.

Geelong, as to be expected for a side five years ahead in development terms, are still steadier than Hawthorn, although the latter has 'go up gears' that the Cats don't possess. As such, even with a weakened and underdone roster, they were able to change the face of the game dramatically inside 10 minutes during the final term. The way the Hawks were motoring in the last term, I thought the Cats actually did well to hold on for the win.

36-23 shots at goal

on that basis it should have been a 6 or 8 goal win

the running shots we converted, it was the easy set shots we missed

I dare saythere will be a lot of kicking practise at Geelong this week

Entertaining stuff from the Magpies and the Crows.

Great win by the Crows. Its early days yet, but maybe I've undersold them in saying they won't make the eight.

Collingwood pushed them all the way, but will rue the last minute or so, where they failed to capitalise on a couple of good opportunities to snare the four points.
