AFL take the moral high ground

Have the AFL actually come out and said this isn't a problem for them and it is just a RL problem? I'm not sue why everyone is so het up about the AFL, its the media that are sticking the knife in not the AFL. We need to learn better ways to control the media, sticking it to AFL isn't going to help us.

Have you ever heard of Hawthorn President Jeff Kennett?

According to him, it's a RL problem. AFL is wholesome.

well it's depressing but i don't wanna just give up trying to do my bit for league.

Nor should you, a lot of women League fans are feeling a bit misrepresented when News Ltd and co tell them how they're feeling about the situation when in reality the responses have been varied from one end to the other. So it'll be good to see what you both can come up with, it'll probably have Bec Wilson keeling over her computer (although that could just be the copious amount of alcohol)

Geez if you guys are so worried about bias in the mainstream media and refusal to print comments on their websites why don't you contact the independant paper that everyone used to read on the train or similar? (I assume its still going the name escapes me and their articles were mainly from freelance contributions) From what I remember there was a bit of league coverage in it.....I'm sure they'd like a confrontational but researched article to boost their circulation/what revenue they get from advertising. Instead of whinging about it on an internet formum to a small group of people

MX is a great idea. Although you can be rest assured that AFL will come in with a nice old cheque once they get wind of it.

YES! Perhaps when confronted with a differing opinion from one of her peers (as in a woman who claims to like rugby league and writes about it) she'll wake up.

The AFL pr is full of sh*t as the articles written. I can't be bothered going back over this whole thread but Australian Football fans generally despise Andrew Demetriou and Adians Andersons dictatorial manor, when asked about sexually misdiscretions though, what are they supposed to say. It is not them making comparisons to the NRL and Rugby League. Their female relations agenda is for there own business.

Any AFL troll lurking around making comparisons is an ingorant tool. One such tool make a sexual misconduct AFL vs NRL threat on the Big Footy (Aussie Rules) site yesterday. Everyone responed with distain and statements of nothing to celebrate because they and myself (as an Australian Football fan as well) know the AFL has a history of the same sh*t. Most AFL fans know very well the past behaviour of Adam Heuskes, Peter Burgoyne and Michael O'Loughlin plus the naming of Steven Milne and Leigh Montagna in an investigation.

Here's are good post from Big Footy.
a percentage of AFL players have acted pretty poorly in the past, exactly the same premise as NRL - wealthy young men taking risks, fuelled by alcohol, perceiving women as playthings, and having no shortage of women throwing themselves at their feet. It has to stop from the male side, definitely. But the female side also needs to stop being so naive in thinking that a: hooking up with an AFL player necessarily means that they give a sh*t about the girl; and b: that situations don't arise where the issue of consent is ambiguous. You can change public perception but you can't change what dwells within, and if a girl doesn't want to regret her actions and feel demoralised later, then maybe trying to get flirty with the footballers is not for her.

the owner of a Melbourne-based stripping agency described most AFL footballers as "pigs". The owner, who refused to be named, said boys-will-be-boys behaviour still ruled.

Two years ago, an end-of-season party for a leading Melbourne-based AFL club ended with several players offering one veteran stripper cash for sexual favours.

"They all wanted to have a go. It was tag-team," the agency owner said. When the deal was struck, one of the players offered an extra $50 to urinate on her, while another player offered $50 if she would let him defecate on her. "They were disgusting. It's like a pack mentality and they think they can get away with anything," the owner said.

What's clear is that it isn't an AFL problem, an NRL problem or a soccer ARU problem, it is a professional male team sports problem! It is happening across all codes its just we seem to get alot more flack for it, probably due to us being the most popular code and also being the most popular code in the media heart of the country.

The double edged sword of being popular! Also you have to realise that it is only big news in NSW and Q'land (and by nature it does make the national news, especially on Fox). Not sure about Vic and SA but in WA there has hardly been any column inches given to it over the last two weeks. Likewise I am sure the Ben Cousins saga wasn't big news in Sydney but in Perth it was front page for weeks.

I live in Dunsborough & have still heard heaps about it. It has been on local radio & have read plenty in the West Australian. People at work have also been talking about it.

Im in Melbourne and I cant tell you its HUGE news here, on all the main new telecasts, in the papers (full second page in the Herald today) and all over talkback radio.

But AFL keeps coming out and saying "thats not our culture" its never happened in our sport, or even worse, Demetriou is saying it used to years ago but we "cleaned it up"!

Which totally misses the point that League has taken steps to fix this up years ago.

No hysteria, sensationalism, or talkback about Brisbane Lion Albert Proud glassing a girl and being in court this week.

I honestly believe there is a definate hidden agenda in the continuous claims rugby league is against women. The media is buiding a perception (which is working) of the game and it's attitudes about females. Sports are competing for women as they are the decision makers in the family.
This started happening years ago, remember fat Pat from The Australian and his claim "rugby league was a culture to despise". This is a concerted attack to marginalise the game.

The only way to change things for the NRL, is to be hard on players who don't do the right thing. Soon the tables will turn on the AFL if the NRL players can be seen doing the right thing, as there players won't have been presented with the same force to change cultures off the field.

it's true. and arguably they've already been doing positive things to try and avoid these incidents since back in 2004 ... to some extent they have to wait for all that work and effort to start paying off for them.
