That just about sums it up. I love Aku, I love that he can score a try from what looks like an imposible position, and I love the marketability he provides for the club to secure the hearts of the more casually interested fan.
But for mine, a well constructed team that will compete at the top level over multiple seasons can't afford to have such a large chunk of cap invested out that wide. Look at any club with recent success and you will see capable to good wingers as part of their supporting cast. Not $500k a season star wingers. You could mount an excellent arguement that Aku is one of the best, if not the best, winger in the game. But throwing money at him that could be better utilized elsewhere is not going to win us a permiership. For the record, the last Dally M winger of the year to win a premiership in the same year was Willie Carne in '92 for the Broncos. In addition to that, the last winger who had previously won this accolade and then went on to win a premiership afterwards was Marcus Bai in '99 (Winger of the year '98).
Wing is probably the easiest position in Rugby League to find good young athletes to go out and do a job for you. They may not make the spectacular plays a bloke like Aku makes, but consider how many wingers with a fraction of the attacking talent of Uate are walking around with premiership rings. At the end of the day, I want to see Newcastle be successfull over the long term more than I want to see Uate run around in Red & Blue every week fighting just to make the top eight.
But it's all probably moot, as I believe Uate will sign for much lower than $500K a year for us.
