Bit of controversy sells more books. Smith did, in the spur of the moment without knowing extent of injury, what any club capt should do if he thinks his player might be sent off. He was trying to put doubt in the refs mind and plead a case for his own player.

If anything I thought McKinnon might have stirred the pot a bit with some anger at the NRL for still not properly clamping down on dangerous lifting tackles despite what happened to him.

Very sensitive issue, but you'd think the Australian captain would find some time to contact the young bloke to see how he is going.

Can't believe people are still going to defend his comment

That wasn't the time for Smith to blame anyone. It was VERY f**king clear that something was wrong the moment everyone cleared away and by the time the penalty was blown Smith should have known it was more important than two f**king points. Regardless of who is to blame, you don't f**king blame a kid who couldn't move his f**king arms or legs in that moment. You don't expect those comments from a captain, the Australian captain and someone whose held in such high regard; he should have known better.

Said it for some time that Smith is one the most classless, arrogant merkins there is in the game. Fact he's NEVER apologised for it, a year after it happened just highlights that. Anyone who defends his comments need to pull their f**king heads out; there's more important things in life than football.

Well said mate.

No one ever gets sent off anymore & especially for a "dangerous throw".

It was always going to be a penalty & always go on report, just like 99% of "dangerous throws".

Not an excuse PR.

I'm sure that we will see this on 60 Minutes tonight, but it is worth watching the tackle again and watching Cameron Smith the whole time and observing his conduct. The referee was trying to make sure he was alright and then getting the correct care (and not moving him until neck braces etc were in place). All the while Smith was trying to force his point on the referee EVEN after being told to go away and they'll talk after.

It was appalling behaviour, and it is something that just needed to be dealt with by a simple apology after the game once he realised the magnitude of the situation. He didn't, he is now being called out on it and it is going to do a huge amount of damage to his reputation. Simply he deserves it.

The game, two points, a send off or sinbinning... They aren't bigger than a players injury. I hope he learns that.

Cameron Smith is about the biggest grub to ever play the game. How anyone can defend his actions in this incident is truly beyond me.

For those saying "how could smith know Alex was so hurt?"... Perhaps just looking at McKinnon just ONCE might have helped. Read the game day thread from that night. Most people knew from just watching his reaction on camera that Alex was seriously injured. People could read his lips that he was saying "I can't move my arms!". It was clear as day he was seriously hurt.

The red was walking over to Alex and trying to make sure he was ok, talking to trainers etc, and Smith just kept coming like a rabid dog to argue over the most obvious lifting tackle penalty you'll ever see.

He is a scumbag

Even after the extent of the damage was revealed smith still stuck to his guns, so it's not about smiths initial reactions anymore

Is his book self-published? I can't seem to see any reference to a major publisher backing him, which is strange. This is the type of book they usually jump at and sells like hot-cakes.

This.

And even if he didn't know what was going on (and FTR I think anyone that believes that is completely delusional given every single other player and the ref all seemed to know) that doesn't change the fact that he didn't reach out and apologise for his behaviour in over a year.

What good is an apology going to do now though. I'm sure Smith is probably embarrassed by it all now but an apology is not young to change.anything. You're all just getting caught up in the 60 Minutes hype

It's going to do nothing now, as it would clearly just be a bit of PR bullshit on Smith's part.

At the time though, it's quite obvious it would have helped given both he and his parents were very upset about it.

f**k off idiot, what's he got to apologise for?

Mckinnon should man up and admit he tried for a penalty

You're trolling right?

Otherwise I hope for humanity's sake you've yet to reproduce and someone has sprayed you so you never can.

There's no point in Smith apologising now. It will not come across as genuine.

People should be concerned for Alex, not wasting their time worrying about a pointless apology from Smith

Are we surprised?

Shit cheating club, shit cheating coach, shit cheating captain.

The Storm have built their club on being the worst grubby cheats the game has seen whilst simultaneously being the self perceived victim... why would they change tact now.

I agree completely with this. However given he had over a year to do so and didn't I believe any criticism he cops because of it is more than deserved.

wether he can be genuine or not i don't care, it's not a good look for the most influential player in the game and one who carries the responsibility of leading our country in our code
