I'm wondering what the protocols are in a case like this and who has the authority to sack him. At my old workplace, it was pretty easy to retrench someone if there was a downturn in business. But sacking someone for disciplinary reasons was a whole different matter. You had to go through a long winded process involving Human Resources staff and ultimately being signed off by someone near the top. I assume something similar is in play here, and it may take at least few days of paperwork and meetings to get rid of him.
