Been looking at their head to heads now, there aren't many but Alan Langer dominated Andrew Johns in the head to head battles eg 1998 origin, 2001 origin game 3, and in 2002 he was player of the origin series not johns.

Johns didn't play Origin in 2001 he was out injured.

Yet both Johns and Stuart have a higher win % than Langer at Origin level.

the fact qlders are even debating this shows how truly geniused they are

Actually mate, I'm a qlder but that doesn't even figure into my estimations.

I rank Langer, Johns and Stuart all on the same level, 2 of them are a NSW players.

I Think you NSW fans are so desperate for something to feel good about that you have seized onto Johns as the best player of all time because you have nothing else to feel good about these days.

If you were under say 20 when Langer finished his career then it's fair to say you have no idea.

He couldn't do as many things as Joey and everyone knew what he could do but they still couldn't stop him

Facts are facts. Langer was a very very good player. Johns changed the game.

Did he change the game? Sure he was a great player but what did he 'change' about it?

The skill level he had was beyond anyone I have seen. His bending right to left hook kicks to the centre of the field were a revolution. The tactical picking off of big men who had tired in the line by going into dummy half at opportune moments. Johns literally created havoc in a defensive line whenever he went to dummy half. His genius was disguising when he would go there. He would often scoot across the line faking going in at first receiver then would instead jump in steal the ball from dummy half and run it at a defender he saw slacking off in the line earlier in the set. 9/10 he would either score or offload to a runner to score.
His defense was the best I have ever seen. Technically the best defender to ever play the game IMO. A freakishly strong tackler who would upend massive forwards onto their arses. His greatest asset was finding ways to keep his side in a game even when they were being dominated in the middle. Noone has ever had his tactical kicking game.

"In 2008, less than a year into his retirement, Johns was named as the Greatest Player of the last 30 years by the publication 'Rugby League Week', beating the likes of Queensland legend Wally Lewis (voted #2), fellow NSW star Brad Fittler (voted #3) and then current Queensland and Australian captain Darren Lockyer (voted #4). The judges for the poll included league historian David Middleton, former NSW and Test player Mark Geyer and veteran sports journalist Tony Adams. On 28 September 2012, Johns was named as the eighth 'Immortal' of rugby league."

You might go back to pre-modern rugby league for other greats but then I think it really is impossible to compare.

Oh well, if Mark Geyer says so...

No question Johns is a great, but others achieved more imho... and in terms of changing the game, Wally Lewis did as much as anyone, and certainly as much as Johns

They specifically changed the rule book twice because of Langer's ability to strip the ball and tackle one on one.

That's changing the game in anyone's world.

... as the fourth or fifth man into a tackle

You high?

Langer had the best one on one ball strip of all time. Props would be ruck the ball towards the defensive line, and he would take from their hands at full pace.

They specifically changed the rules to not allow one on one strips during his playing days, it was only changed back after his retirement.

Langer clearly ahead. Stuart and Sterling before Johns. Johns was a great but far from the greatest halfback. Also received special treatment to cover up his drug misuse so was fortunate to have the career he had.

Langer's career achievements completely shit over Joeys.
