Johns the better player, Langer achieved more... imo... still find it strange that Johns is an immortal - Meninga, Langer, Sterling and others all achieved more in the modern-ish era

Stuart's injuries where his undoing.

Great player, magnificent long and short kicking game, could pass both sides so much accurately and sharply, a solid defender and someone who I rate as having the best dummy in the game, he would time that dummy to split second perfection. Stuart was also very good at playing to his side's strength's.

Langer was a lite version of Stuart.

Langer was a lite version of Stuart.

I think that's unfair to Langer. He had a style all of his own. 5 meters out from the line Langer had more ability to just make something happen than Stuart, and probably Johns as well imo. In addition to his precision kicking and passing he knew how to use his size as an advantage and could almost crawl under the defensive line to score a lot of tries. lol He was a genius.

Pretty sure Bozo tried that...1994 'roo tour if memory serves me. Didn't work out.

All great players. Johns unquestionably the best. Langer ahead of Stuart for mine.

If I remember correctly, he didn't have them both on the field at the same time. He had them playing 40 minutes each.

It was the 1st test of the 1990 Roo Tour. Stuart and Langer both started in the halves and Australia went on to lose. Langer was dropped and Stuart was retained for the following 2 tests and won the series.

Similar to the 1994 Roo Tour, where Langer played the first test and Great Britain won. Then Langer was dropped for Stuart and Australia pasted Great Britain in the final 2 tests.

Langer was a great player, one of the best halves of his era, like Cronk is today. He was not the best of his era, like Thurston is today, and not one of the all time best, like Johns.

Some are saying that Thurston is approaching Johns like levels, but I don't think he is there yet (and may not get there, just because Johns always made the right play in big matches when it counted, and was a much better tackler), so if you think about the gap between Cronk and Thurston today (not huge, but noticeable), I think that is something similar to the gap between Johns and Langer, though Johns was probably even further ahead of Langer than Thurston is to Cronk.

It is not possible to be sure, as they didn't really overlap in time, and the game went through quite a few changes between the early and late 90s.

All great players and great to watch, just trying to "quantify" the difference between them a bit.

The more we forget the better Johns will get . . . trouble is I'm old enough to rationalise the bullshit

Johns is the best footballer I have seen. I rate him only a bees dick ahead of Wally. The only reason is Johns could kick goals, apart from that reason it is near impossible to separate them.

Back on topic;

Johns > Stuart > Langer.

Stuart has superior passing game and long kicking game. Langer the better grubber kicks and a better tripping game . Could also strip the ball well till they changed the rules on him.

Stuart got the nod early in the 90's for Australia because of the Laurie Daley factor. There's no way you could have Kevin Walters starting at Five-eight so they went for Raiders combo.

The competition for Australia spots seemed more personal back then. When Belcher missed out to Jack or Elias to Walters the club and player were pissed. Seems a bit meh these days.

Well Daley played in the centres on the 1990 Kangaroo tour when Stuart was halfback. Cliff Lyons played 5/8 when Langer was dropped after the first test. So while the Daley/Stuart combination helped the Australian cause later on, it certainly wasn't the reason Stuart was selected over Langer.

For those who forget (the music is worth it)

Johns has become a far better player since he retired. Very good player, yes. Great, ha, not even good enough to retain the NSW half position.

so many good halfbacks in the mid 90s. Joey just starting out, Alfie, Sticky and then there was JT, Field and Lammy - all very good club halfbacks

He played 9 in that team because he was even better (out of position) than the next best candidate; even more so than he was ahead of Kimmorley at 7!

End result, we racked up 56 and apparently Origin was dead!?
