His last half a dozen games last year were good. And without him we crumbled through the rest of the season.

I suspect we don't need his on-field leadership so much anymore, but if he can still play like he did before he got surgery then he's in our top 17 for sure. Just don't let the merkin pass the ball.

Which middle forward would you leave out (from last night's top 17) to fit Watmough in? I'm guessing Terepo? But I reckon that leaves us a genuine prop short. I'd leave out a back up hooker if it were up to me.

The no pass rule on Watmough for sure. It's f**king embarrassing that a bloke who has been playing professional rugby league as long as he has can't pass properly. I reckon he will get smashed from the refs with incorrect play the balls early in the season too

I'd give Watmough the benefit of the doubt for this season. Start him from the bench Round 1 (recovery from injury), and see how he goes from there. If it's not going well for him, then maybe we can subtlely covert the rest of his contract into another role at the club.

I'd prefer Edwards at lock first up, and if we go in with no dummy half on the bench then we'll still cover our front row rotation (Wicks, Gower/Alvaro?), as well as having Watmough and one extra (Moeroa?) on the bench to give the others a break.

Nah I agree we have enormous depth in the forwards. I'm sure this is partly why we don't want to pay too much for Paulo. And probably why Watmough won't be rushed back. At all.

Edwards is at his best on the fringes, by the looks Tep is being groomed as our long term 13.

It's a tough one, for sure.

But I reckon Choc needs to be in the side - he's experienced in terms of Finals footy, has a terrific attitude in D, and is just a winner.

But as to who to drop for him...really tough one.

We will no doubt get injuries this year ... and we will need all that depth at some point.

Id be happy if choc played 60% of our games this year and was healthy down the backend of the season. Then I would be happy to see him call it a day

Choc may not play every game, but he will play in the games that count.

When it's time for Choc and Beau to hang up the boots, Tepai, Kenny & Co will be winners and leaders themselves

I'm not trying to be a smart arse but which games are these? Or which will be the games that dont count? Surely every game is as important as the next

Fair enough. I thought Moeroa was better on the fringes last year, and Kenny great in the middle the year before, but however it falls is ok.

Given the above I would have Gower on the bench to cover Tepai until Watmough is fit, and then it comes down to which of Gower, Edwards, Wicks, or Alvaro/Terepo to drop for Watmough's return... I suspect it will be Alvaro/Terepo, with Gower then shifting into the front row rotation?

Good point. It's a luxury to be choosing 17 with our current depth, but it just takes a few injuries or suspensions (hello junior) to leave us with less choice and depth for a while.

You think that Rnd 1 is as important as Rnd 24 or 25 ?

Well, you get the same number of points for winning. Rd 25 only becomes super-important because you didn't do well enough in Rd 1-X.

I think the issue with determining the 'most important' comes down to how good the opposition are. In the very tightly matched games, you might want a particular type of player on board.

aRHH its good to see we have got abit of depth and were talking about who is in and out.

I think this is going to be really good for the team, there all going to want to play and nothing better then healthy competition.

bart thinks round one is more important because winning then definitely puts you in the top eight.
Yep, definitely for one week ;-). Which of course is better than not being in the eight at all during the season...

Which team would choose not to put their best possible side on the park in Round 1 (or 23 or whatever)? (Rhetorical: answer = 0.)

Is Watmough without any match fitness in our top 17 for Round 1? (Rhetorical: answer = No.)
