Lovet and Martin OK but anti is just a bog average defensive back rower, nothing exceptional.

You need to have a defensive player in the ranks, even just for depth.

That is what Fulton was for us almost entirely.

Until we get halves that can handle themselves defensively, we will need defensively strong back rowers to protect them.

Sadly, Moses' inability to improve his defence has meant Santi is a neccessity to the side.

Brooks' defence has improved dramatically this year, so much so that he has a better tackle success rate than Moses.

Paul Carter just sitting around waiting for a chance and Souths get him.

Hits hard, great ball skills and a 80 minute player. Of course we don't go get him *sigh*

How on earth are we so hamstrung that even with the current squad there is no room to move within the cap?

:?

Utterly ridiculous. There's poor cap management, and then there's this malarkey.

As an aside - bit rich for Mayer to continue blaming previous management and coaches for everything. How many of the current squad have been signed or re-signed under his regime?

Obviously speaking from a lack of knowledge of how club finances in relation to the salary cap is concerned, but is it possible that we are unable to use the entirety of the cap?

How else can such a squad like ours be at the cap roof, while others like Melbourne, Sydney, Cronulla, North Queensland, Warriors etc aren't over (given the salaries many of their squad members are on)

The only other reason is that we are still paying out contracts to players at other clubs.

It's a fair question, but IIRC Mayer and others have confirmed that we're using the full cap, and that we're now finished paying players at other clubs. Whether they're telling the truth is another thing.

Additionally, we're well behind on TP payments etc, which is where the big clubs really gain an advantage (some clubs are allegedly up to $2m).

This seems to be the perennial query over WT actions / inactions on the player market since time of our inception. Whats is up with our player finances? Yes, the recruitment and retention officers should be moved on, but if they are also handcuffed with limited $$$ we might as well quit.

In that situation WT will always remain uncompetitive, unable to attract star signings and reliant on youth which will always be pinched once they have displayed they can perform at NRL standard by other clubs. We will be a expensive feeder club to the bigger, better run, more financially sound clubs.

I agree.

The saddest point here is that the club has had 2 golden opportunities to draw players to the club, after the 2005 grand final and after the success of 2010 and 2011 when we were being touted as the next premiership winner.

and the club dropped the ball big time on both occasions.

The worst part about both of those times, there was little indication that both would happen, so its near impossible to know when we'll again be in the finals.

A minor point, we did draw some bigish signings after 2005 (some were before we actually won the GF). The probably was that they were such massive duds it handicapped us for years. O'hara, Lolesi and Sam Harris were diabolical while Galloway was good for a period of time

Yep,just like the old days at Wests when Manly and Easts used to pinch all the decent Magpie players.:x

Geez this club has an abundance of phoneys who are surplus to our requirements !!

Of all the non - playing staff McDonnell is the supreme charlatan !

The big concern for us is if Taylor turns out to be as inept as Ronald !

This is my fear too with Taupau.

In saying that does anyone else think Taupau has lost 'some' of his impact starting? I still love his enthusiasm but I just think his stats are down compared to last year. Maybe I am just a hard marker....

Pardon me while I just change feet :D

Yeah - don't be too hard on yourself I was starting to think the same way.....but after last Friday, well he really showed the benefit of having a gun starting, it meant we were on the top from the get go and it probably made life easier for Ava and Lodge because they came on whilst we had the momentum. Interestingly, Gus Could whilst commentating on Sunday during Dogs v Titans stated that it is different (starting vs bench) and that it does take time to make the transition. Hopefully he has now made the successful transition and will continue to dominate consistently.

Apparently Woods and Klemmer are best mates now. Not sure what his contract situation is but geez Klemmer would look good in a Tigers jersey! He'd fill Keithy's jersey nicely.
