Apparently the tigers have salary cap problems for the next 3 years. Article in the Australian today.

If this is true then that'll do me. What kind of monkeys have been running this club ? If we are dealing with this crap for the next 3 years then any decent players we have left will almost certainly move on and we are destined to be wooden spoon contenders for many more years to come.
We definitely rival the Eels for the worst run club in the league. I'm over it

Marina Go stating that previously board members were directly negotiating with player managers proves what so many of us were saying and our level of contempt for the previous board.

We are an utter clusterf**k of a club and it is going to take something special to survive and thrive

Salary cap issues? When is this club going to get its act together? Always excuses. The latest major one that has put off all serious examination of what is going on, has been the on-going saga of the Balmain Leagues Club side of things and its finances. That has given them (the WT Board & CEO) the breathing space to continue on in their ramshackle, profligate ways for way too long. The NRL intervention only seems to have papered over the cracks at this stage. I'd love to see the NRL audit of the club, its finances and player payments.

Maybe, the club with its finances could never have afforded the $900k p.a we stumped up to retain Farah?

Either the place has to be fixed, with a rectification strategy to fix their finances and the pathway to regain competitiveness on the field made public, to allow people to be held accountable, or this club will not survive in its current form- either we will shifted or allowed to die.

NRL power clubs- Roosters, Bunnies, Storm, Dogs, Manly, Warriors

Tryers- Penrith, Cowboys, Cronulla, Saints, Broncos, KNights, Titans, Raiders

Mickey Mouse clubs- Wests Tigers & Parra.

I'm interested in this as well. I get the impression the salary cap is being used as an excuse.

Are we paying certain players well over their worth ?

I can only assume we must be. Something is not right. Lord knows but the usual things that bring clubs undone are- backloaded contracts, over paying players for their worth at the stage of their career, paying too much for marque players and finaly doing well in the comp or winning the comp pressing up the value of the playing roster and forcing out players.

At least WT are not threatened by the last bit of winning / doing well in the comp forcing up players salaries....... :)

So, Marina Go is today quoted as saying "It’s probably about three years before we unravel the mess we have inherited".

Yet our "Strategic Plan", released only a couple of months ago and forwarded by Marina herself, states the Performance Measure in 2017 is to make the NRL TOP FOUR. http://www.weststigers.com.au/content/dam/tigers/documents/Wests Tigers Strategic Plan_FINALv2.pdf

2017 is only two years away, yet today she says it will take three years to fix the mess. I'm very confused.

While I don't doubt previous management left us in a mess, it's all too easy and convenient for the current management to put their hands up, point back and say "it's all their fault".

This is just more spin.

Here is the Story from Brent Read

Wests Tigers mess will take three years to fix
Wests Tigers chairwoman Marina Go has urged the club’s supporters to keep the faith as they wade way through a salary cap mess that could take three years to fix.
In the lead-up to the Tigers’ game against the table-topping Broncos, Go revealed the full extent of the cap issues which have hamstrung the club’s attempts to strengthen their roster for next season.

Their plight was rammed home again yesterday when Penrith announced they had poached young star Te Maire Martin. Martin played for the Junior Kiwis earlier this year but the Tigers were forced to let him go, his departure coming only a matter of days after winger Pat Richards confirmed he would join Super League side Catalans next season.
“It’s probably about three years before we unravel the mess we have inherited,” Go said.
“Every day, every week there’s a new thing we look at and go ‘oh my God’. It’s a serious issue. It’s a serious challenge.
“Fans and members just want to win every week. They don’t understand, and neither should they, that we have massive challenges around what the playing squad will look like next year and the year after given the salary cap challenges we have inherited.
“What we’re trying to do is work with that. Over the last 10 months the board has not entered into contract negotiations with players — that’s not our place.
“In the past, that’s not the case. In the past various members of the board were negotiating with player managers. There was clearly no overarching strategy. I can feel the pain for members and fans.
“I want to be able to say to them that was in the past. I can only tell you that in the future every decision that is made will be with a long-term club in mind. Unfortunately we have inherited a couple of years of pain.

“We’re going to do our best within that. But unfortunately there is going to be some pain. People are saying to us ‘you keep releasing all of these players and you’re not buying any others’.
“That’s because we know what next year’s contractual arrangements look like and we’re freaking out.”
The Tigers will be given a reminder of their cap problems on Sunday when they meet the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium. Among the opposition will be Adam Blair, a player the club let go at the end of last season but continues to carry on its salary cap.
Amid the difficulties behind the scenes, Go voiced her unqualified support for coach Jason Taylor and confirmed the club was edging towards the appointment of a new chief executive.
The Tigers are also on the verge of announcing a new major sponsor, replacing Meriton on the front of the jersey.
Meriton owner Harry Triguboff has been a long-time supporter of the club and Go hopes to keep him involved on another level.
“Harry has always said year in, year out, I am only there because they need me,” Go said.
“He said it again this year. The reality is we have somebody else who wants to be our major sponsor. It’s very exciting for us. It’s fantastic Harry has been with the club and supported it all these years.
“We value him and want to try to work with him in another way.”
The Tigers head to Brisbane in 15th place, locked in a battle with Newcastle to avoid the wooden spoon. Yet Go stressed better days were ahead.
“I know it doesn’t look like it from the outside but things are going well,” Go said.
“We inherited something that needed fixing and you can’t fix these things overnight. We’re very committed to where we are heading. The first year was always going to be difficult and it has been. the first year has been very, very difficult.
“There is so much work to do but it is exciting because none of it is insurmountable. Once we appoint a new CEO it is going to be a smoother transition. We have been walking and it will be time to run.”

As a Eels fan we know all about salary cap drama lol. Shame to see both clubs in a mess. The NRL is at its best when these two sides are going well.

Fluff piece message, still nobody being held to account. Name some names if you are serious.

Justification for WT situation:

“It’s probably about three years before we unravel the mess we have inherited,”
“Every day, every week there’s a new thing we look at and go ‘oh my God’. It’s a serious issue. It’s a serious challenge.Starts off with things a mess, finding new things each day,' “What we’re trying to do is work with that. Over the last 10 months the board has not entered into contract negotiations with players — that’s not our place.
“In the past, that’s not the case. In the past various members of the board were negotiating with player managers. There was clearly no overarching strategy. I can feel the pain for members and fans.

Justification for WT inaction on player market:

“Fans and members just want to win every week. They don’t understand, and neither should they, that we have massive challenges around what the playing squad will look like next year and the year after given the salary cap challenges we have inherited. We’re going to do our best within that. But unfortunately there is going to be some pain. People are saying to us ‘you keep releasing all of these players and you’re not buying any others. That’s because we know what next year’s contractual arrangements look like and we’re freaking out.”

Then ends positive:

“I know it doesn’t look like it from the outside but things are going well,” Go said.
“We inherited something that needed fixing and you can’t fix these things overnight. We’re very committed to where we are heading. The first year was always going to be difficult and it has been. the first year has been very, very difficult.
“There is so much work to do but it is exciting because none of it is insurmountable. Once we appoint a new CEO it is going to be a smoother transition. We have been walking and it will be time to run.”
...............................................................................................................................

I can only comment that 'if things are going well................', I'd hate to see it worse. "situation desperate, but not hopeless'- wasnt that the old movie? WT are trying my allegience.

it's nothing more than wankery to stop fans from alienating their memberships.

If things are so bad, why did they appoint an assistant coach over a successful head coach to run the club?

It would seem to me that the problems they bang on about are still at the club, and those probelsm are still bringing in new problems to the club.

It's nothing but tail chasing.

Can someone do the numbers as to what players are getting paid for next year?

Even with Farah at $900K and Lawrence at $650K I still can't believe the others are getting paid the rest...

Would there be another player getting over $400K?

I want to know if they are spending the full cap?

If we really want to get to the top, have Harry not sponser the team and be in charge of securing Third Party Agreements, he is one of Australia's richest person and I am sure he could have a lot of contacts he could get to put some money into TPA for the Tigers.

TPAs is how all the top clubs bend/break the Salary Cap and we are amongst the worst at it.

Dead set what I was thinking. To my knowledge, Meriton as a brand cannot provide TPAs as they are a sponsor of WT.

If Meriton no longer has anything to do with the WT they can pay our players as much as they want for promotional pieces. I'm sure Harry could also arrange millions in other TPA arrangements that would benefit everyone.

Players like Tupau, Brooks, Tedesco are highly marketable.

Players have been housed in Meriton appartments before whether that breaches what is classed as a TPA by a sponsor maybe an issue the WT are not letting on.

Lawrence is on a hell of a lot more than 650k. His deal was back ended, and now it's time to pay. Next year is worse, hence why we are trying to offload him to ESL.

I want to know what money muppets like Moses and Sironen are on. They are both park footballers, and salary cap viruses..

I'm not overly concerned about Moses as I can see the kid has got ability to forge a successful career.Sironen however has been totally useless & seems to be disinterested.

I know Moses hasn't set the world on fire but we mustn't ignore the fact that our forwards are pathetic & this kid is 20 yrs of age.Thurston would most likely struggle behind our cream puff forwards !

From what I have seen, Moses could be a decent fullback. He is fast, and operates well in broken field play. His best game for us has been in the 1.

I have seen NOTHING to indicate he will be a first grade play maker. And since we have the best young fullback in the comp in Teddy, I think Moses future lies at fullback with another club.

Moses was outstanding at fullback. Naturally suited......if he can catch bombs....?

Possibly worst five eight Ive ever seen.

Its not too silly to suggest 6 Tedesco 1 Moses. Tedesco would be much better than Moses in 6 and Moses might be every bit as good as Tedesco in 1. Tedesco is a more robust defender, can ballplay at the line and most importantly he isnt scared shitless of physical contact or chancing his arm. Couldnt be a worse general play kicker than Moses.

Persisting with Moses at 6 condemns this side to failure and oblivion.

A few things I took out of this:
* backloaded deals and paying players at other clubs is the main issue with our cap. IIRC Mayer said we were literally only paying one player at another NRL club, though this video suggests otherwise.
* the strategic plan of top 4 in 2017 has now become 'finals by 2017'. This after initially Mayer had spruiked top 4 this year and a GF next year (http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...ans-for-the-club/story-fni3gpz1-1226686420909).
* JT's infamous not caring about results 'taken out of context'. I wonder how quickly he was tapped on the shoulder about that....

All in all, good to see the club doing this sort of thing, but when there's so much contradiction to previous statements it all rings a bit hollow.

Some signings! How 'bout that. They may prove to be shrewd.

http://www.weststigers.com.au/news/2015/08/03/wests_tigers_strengt.html

Wests Tigers are pleased to announce three additions to the extended NRL squad for the 2016 season.

The Club has secured the services of Michael Chee Kam, Jack Littlejohn (both from Manly-Warringah) and Jesse Parahi (Australian Rugby Union) all on one-year contracts.

Chee Kam, 23, has played two NRL games for Manly-Warringah and is a former Australian Schoolboys representative who plays primarily in the backrow.

Littlejohn, also 23-years-of-age, has played five NRL games for Manly-Warringah and can cover a range of positions in the backline but is seen as predominantly a five-eighth or halfback.

Parahi has been a mainstay of the Australian Rugby Sevens team since making his debut in 2010, notching up 33 caps to date.

The 26-year-old captained the Australian squad during various IRB World Series tournaments and won a bronze medal in the 2014 Commonwealth games tournament.

Head Coach Jason Taylor said that all three players will be valuable additions for next season as the Club looks to strengthen its NRL squad.

“It’s really important for us to start building our depth at the Club,” Taylor said. “These three guys are going to help us do that.

“They are all talented players in their own right and having spoken to them each individually, I know that they are coming here to push for first grade position and that’s what we want.

“It’s important to have those players at our Club who are willing to put in the desired work and effort – both on and off the field - to get themselves in a position where they are genuinely pushing for an NRL position.

“These guys have that ambition and it’s going to build competition within our ranks which will help push us forward as a Club.”
