Anyone angry at Marty?

Just want to gauge opinion on this one.

It is all well and fine to want to go to England at some stage of your career, but surely signing a contract a week after pre-season training has started is not ideal.

By not announcing it in the middle of last season he has left a hole in the team and no decent players on the market to fill the void.

I'm not angry at him but I consider his actions pretty selfish.

Thoughts?

No, I'm not angry. Annoyed yes, disappointed yes, but not angry.

As I said earlier this week, I think we were lucky to have held on to him as long as we did, but if the kid had itchy feet, he was always going to be gone sooner or later.

I don't think he had made up his mind to leave in the middle of the season when the trading was taking place, rather he saw an opportuniry and took it, following his dream of the last few years.

As far as players to fill the void, I don't see that we've been left short there - I won't go over it yet again, but we have a good number of players that have played well in the 6/7's, although I would have liked to have kept Koups as a backup had we known Marty was going.

I think the timing is due to him just coming back from an overseas trip and has got the travel bug.

If he and the team played well this year he wouldn't be leaving right now because he would of left last year if travelling was his real reason instead of signing on for 3 years.

Im shattered he's going. :(

To put it in a bit more perspective he could well have left after 1 game. Be thankful the disruption though aggravating is minimal. While new signings are few and far between at the moment, players are out there and you have the money now as opposed to noty at all.

Very selfish indeed. As stated in another thread, we could still have Wiki if that loser left earlier. Hmmm.... Wiki, Macca.... hmm... Know which one I'd choose.

My thoughts are that he knows he's got an uphill battle to retain his position and he's taken the weak option and catted it to the easy league. Hey might be harsh but last year he did NOTHING all year in the most important position on the field.

I know... people will go, "that's a bit harsh".. but at the end of the day, go back and review some of the games. The majority of line breaks against, were cause by his amateur defence.

Hey.. we gave him more than enough chances... I for one am glad to see the back of him.

I don't think anyone has a right to be pissed off with him given that the club allowed the overseas clause in his contract 4 years ago.

If the clause is there he has every right to use it.

It's not like he did a Jamie Lyon/Nathan Blacklock or anything.

Well said. Personally I think the club made a rod for its own back by putting the clause in.

I'm not pissed off with him, just still upset he is going and now the focus really is on youth (Carney) in 05... god I hope he can step up.

As has been said before, we were all at a loss where to play him in our 17's, and I think he would have been a pretty quick casualty with most of us after a few rounds.

it's not ideal, but there's a lot of players (hello james evans, jamie lyon) who wait even later, often until after the season's started, and that's when you're well and truly in the sh*ts, beacuse a player you've been training with is gone. we've now got a whole pre-season to adjust to Marty not being here. it would have been nice, if not fantastic, for McLinden to have told us before July, so that we could have re-signed Wiki or bought someone like Matt Orford, but i don't think the timing is all that bad. it's nice to know that we'll go into next year's market with room for at least one top-line player.

yeah but we gotta resign players as well
yeah, but we're already paying them money right now, so they won't actually affect out salary cap, unless we offer them more than they're getting right now. in the case of Woolford and Schifocfske, i don't think that's gonna happen, cos they're not in as good form as they were when we last signed them. anyway, 2005 should be Woolford's final year IMO. he's been here 10 years, he's had his innings.

but if hes been here 10 years? cant we keep him for cheap?
nope. we get a concession or something. i don't know what it is exactly, but i don't think it's very much from memory.

We also only get the concession on one player, from memory we've used it on Jason Croker. This year we had 4 players that were eligible for the 10-year concession: Croker, Woolford, Wiki & Davico. Off the top of my head, the only other player in the NRL that was eligible was Steve Price, although I have a feeling there may have been one more.

Am I angry? In a word, yes.

If he wanted to leave, he should have made up his mind during the season, not a week after the start of pre-season.
