Wasnt a big fan of Sonnen getting a shoot in the first place and i think the result shows why. I know Sonnens mouth would have sold alot of tickets and pay per view numbers but to me the thing that put the UFC well above boxing was the fact that the Champion would fight the number 1 contender. Not some guy who opens his mouth and says he want a shot.
We will aways get good guys fighting for the title but Dana White sold out for the money with this one. Hopefully this will teach him that guys need to EARN the shot not use there mouths to get one.

He's been there before and got dominated. I don't ever see him fighting for a UFC title, he has too many gaps in his game. Great to watch though.

On the main event, seriously that was always going to happen one way. Sonnen is far too small at LHW.

Can't agree re gaps in his game. I think he's quite good at wrestling quite good at BJJ and quite good in the clinch game. He did have a hole in his striking but his past 3 fights against Herman, Mitrione and now Kongo he's gotten the KO pretty easily. Seems to show he's shoring up his striking game pretty well. Plus he's got surprisingly good cardio.

Wouldn't give him a shot yet he needs one more win IMO but if he was to get one I certainly wouldn't complain.

Agree re mainevent though, wonder what's next for Sonnen.

He broke it twisting it against the mat while he was holding Sonnen down. Yes he continued and didn't realise he had the injury until he was calming down post fight.

Great BJJ and KO power but his technical striking is still extremely sloppy. He also doesn't really use his jiu-jitsu very effectively. I think he has fun fights but he's just not championship quality IMO.

Dana White has said on numerous occasions that Chael did not talk his way into this fight, and I tend to believe him. Chael was the only guy willing to take a fight against Jones on 1 week notice when Hendo went down. SO he was rewarded with the fight anyway.
History has shown Dana White do this to a lot of fighters, particularly in TUF...The guys that bug him and chase him into car parks to tell him they want the fight, he more often than not gives it to them.

No doubt there was plenty of money to make out of this fight but I dont really blame White for giving him the fight...seeing though no one else had the stones to fight him on such short notice. I know its a tough ask to fight someone like Jones on short notice and it would be near suicide if you werent prepared, but the fact remains Chael put his hand up when no one else did.

Man if Chael could have just held on for 27 seconds more, we'd probably be looking at a new Light Heavy champion. I don't think Jones would have continued once he was aware of that toe injury (he nearly fainted just looking at it during the Rogan interview) and if he did continue, Chael could have exploited it with a healthy stomp.

Would hate to be Chael Sonnen right now contemplating what could have been.

That said, Bones completely dominated Chael anyway.

I disagree. The UFC is a business first and foremost. No way they give their main event to some scrub based on a favor. Chael's ability to talk (promote) is what really got him his shot. If the poll they ran during the card is any indication, at least half the viewers wanted Sonnen to win. I'm guessing that's half the ppv gate.

Dana giving willing fighters an opportunity on TUF is pretty different to a title shot.

i think the chance to have Chael coach TUF is what appealed to Dana....

it all comes down to a mix of of everything...

Sonnen's mouth... the 151 cancellation... Jon Jones arm injury from the Vitor fight, which meant any contender had to stay on the shelf for 6months... it made a lot of sense to have him do TUF on the downtime from injury and who better to have him coach against that Chael Sonnen.

it was as expected... Jon Jones was just far, far too good.

i think for Jon Jones a lot will depend on the HW division... if as expected Cain beats bigfoot, expect Daniel Cormier to drop down to LHW and get an immediate title shot... maybe Gustaffason??

Anderson is lurking on the peripheral... i get the feeling that fight is just around the corner.

as for Chael... i think he has heaps to offer still... i think he is by far the number 2 MW around... and i get the feeling that Anderson maybe about to vacate his title and go hunting for superfights.

until then... Chael has a heap of fights to keep him busy... Id love to see him fight Vitor Belfort & Wanderlei Silva at MW... Lil Nog & Lyotto Machida at LHW...

theres good fights out there for him... well all know how much shit he's talked about everyone...

Chael is a big draw, that's what got him the fight. He was outclassed but at least he came to fight unlike some big LHW names who looked scared.

It would be a bit of a joke if Gustaffason got the title shot after pulling out of that recent fight.

I doubt Anderson wants any bit of Jones, he strikes me as a politician.

Cormier vs Jones would be a fantastic fight, really hope to see that one.

So many possibilities for big fights in every division. Joe Silva must be loving life.

These days almost anyone in the top 6-8 of a division could challenge for a title and give it a good crack. Evolving so rapidly imagine the sport in 5 years time, I just hope they don't introduce too many more weight classes and cloud the belts. (Super middleweight, cruiser weight, etc)

I think they need a Cruiserweight at 230 and possibly a heavier women's belt at 145. Cruiserweight sooner rather than later IMO. There's just too much space between 205 and 260

Only after getting offered the fight did Chael start trash talking Jones, so yes, his ability to promote the fight was a massive factor in him gaining a title shot against Jones, but the sinple fact that no one else wanted to fight Jones when Hendo got injured clearly pissed of Dana and hence IMO he felt that Chael deserved the title shot over anyone else.
As I said, Im am well aware that Dana knew the potential to earn millions, I still think the fact that Chael was keen on the fight when no one else was was a contributing factor!

I'm a big jones fan, since the bonnar fight I have considered him the best and he's just gone on to prove me right.

To be honest the idea of him going to HW has always made me nervous. Its starting to make me less and less nervous as time goes on though, I really have a hard time seeing him lose to even cain or jds, and how epic would those fights be.

Hopefully he stops fighting middleweights and takes on a LHW soon. If the Gustafsson-Machida fight happens that would be a good title eliminator while he either heals or takes the fight vs Silva.

Too may divisions already, don't want to see anymore.

230 would be a joke as well, very few heavyweights have to cut to make 260 so practically the whole division is eligible.

Having 225 pounders fight 260 pounders is farcical. They are clearly different in terms of body shape, power and agility.

It doesn't make sense to have a 10-20 pound weight gap in every other weight class, yet the jump from LHW to HW is 55.

I think the talent pool would be extremely thinned out then. Weight Divisions need to stay as is now, I don't want any more.
