NEW SHARKS DEAL IN MOTION FOR FLANNO
Cronulla CEO Lyall Gorman has revealed the Sharks have begun talks to extend the contract of coach Shane Flanagan beyond 2017.
With the Sharks in first place on 22-points, Flanagan has his men firing and charging towards the finals and recently kicked off talks for a new deal.
Weve been having some initial chats with his manager and Ive been having some initial chats with Shane, not just about a seasons contract but his aspirations holistically, where he wants to end up in football and where he wants to go and such, Gorman told foxsports.com.au.
Those discussions are ongoing. Its like our players coming off contract, were very focused on where were at and trying to improve our football.
All those things are in mind and when the time comes well do the right thing and address them.
Sharks Coach Shane Flanagan barks orders.
Having started his NRL coaching career with the club in 2010 following the sudden departure of Ricky Stuart with six rounds remaining, Flanagan has been through some serious highs and lows during his six years in charge of the club.
Flanagan was suspended by the NRL for the 2014 season as part of the fallout from the supplements program run by former strength and conditioning coach Trent Elkin in 2011.
That year the club claimed the wooden spoon in what was an incredibly difficult and frustrating time for the coach and club.
Since resuming his post, Flanagan has not only built an incredible roster but team culture, with the Sharks making the finals on three occasions under the mentor.
Already this season, Brisbane boss Wayne Bennett and Roosters mentor Trent Robinson have extended their contracts.
The Sharks are aware that Flanagan will attract interest from rivals should he come off contract and have moved early in a bid to keep him a one-club coach.
Hes already contracted with us for next year so of course theyre positive, Gorman said of the discussions.
Hes doing a wonderful job for the club. Its been a challenging time for the club over the years.
Weve seen a great turnaround and Shanes leading that on the park. Hes done outstanding work.
(Hes a one team coach) which I think is great in football. Theres been some great stories like Bellamy and Bennett and a few guys who have done that.
Its great for the game and the club. Talking about the era of one-club players disappearing, it would be great to get that back in the club as well.
