Anyone still want to sack Flanno?

Lazy merkins. Just play it properly. Every time the Fafitas play the ball the refs are screaming at them to use their foot. The Manly crowd were booing Fafitas about it yesterday.

Easy Fixes:

Play the Ball Technique
Urgency around loose balls
Kick Pressure

Not so easy fixes:

Line speed in general
Val poor D reads defending try line
Yardage on get out sets
Repeat set gain percentage (way too low)

Impossible fixes:

Have a better halfback

These are all why we are a mid table (at best) team. The frustration is that a number of these have been evident for some time and haven't been adequately addressed. Kicking being the number 1 issue that was obviously a wekaness and still is (Ennis doing more has helped)

Yardage on get out sets comes from doing more than 1 out running. Need support runners for tip ons or to keep it to one or two man tackle to get a quicker PTB. Being prepared to move the ball on tackle 4 to create some space can work as well.

Recruitment for next season is critical for resolving the issues of kicking for field position and repeat sets as well as creating try scoring opportunities. Maloney will improve this but another strong kicking option will be important.

In think im beginning to see what Flange means (his interpretation) of playing to our strengths. When on song our forwards are the measure of any side. They gloss over our shortcomings which is our halves and the links to the backs. I know, Captain Obvious right?. So when the forwards fail we are exposed badly for what we are. Its a pressure game. If our game plan fails (ie hard running through the middle) then the only alternative is resorting to the less effective (again in Flange's eyes) portion of our game which is the shift left or right. The shift doesn't work because under pressure we drop the pill or fail to find space because our halves aren't creating any. So we revert to what we think we know best which is the one out bullshit forward hit up without an off load to reduce the risk of dropping the ball. What is worse is if the forwards are having an off day they tend to drop the pill anyway or in frustration under pressure milk penalties or give them away. The PTB are slow in a bid to protect possession which when all else fails is the only chance we have of staying in the game. Solution: Don't be so god damn fegging fugging fooking wedded to this mythical game plan. If its failing try something else. We have players that can play what's in front of them and don't get the chance. Maloney will be a godsend with that. Mick plays like that now. Bird will love it (centre please not lock). BB is a hole runner. How about we try making a few for him. Flange im sure is trying his best but he just doesn't seem to see what others do. Like I said I think he sees the safest option as playing the grinding forward footy. He 's correct when that works. He seems completely at sea with any other option though.

Good insight, guys - and I'm NOT being sarcastic!

x2

Just wonder though, if FDs "easy fixes" really are easy fixes . Its been difficult to get players to sign when other clubs want them for a few years now . Maybe we have a few who for, whatever reason, are difficult to coach.

I thought there was not enough steamrolling up the middle yesterday that's what let the manly forwards get on top.

We were shifting the ball way too much, what ever happened to softening up a side before spreading it ?

I don't really mind if we soften up, steamroll spread or whatever. I just hate that we seem to stick at what isn't working. Maybe what isn't working is still the best we have? Fugggg. Id rather we try different things when shits are trumps though. Anyone see Widdup try a chip and chase when the shit was all over the fan? Nearly came off.

Exactly Vin.
We are a one dimensional team.
If what we are doing doesn't work we don't know how to, or even think to try and change it.
We just keep doing whatever isn't working and praying for it to come off.

How hard is it for someone to think "hey this one out running with the pigs isn't working let's try and send it wide and see what the backs can do" or "geez were getting murdered when we shift it lets try a set up the guts and see what happens"
Noooooooo, we just keep on keeping on with same shit.

Unfortunately you have to get on top of an opposition before you can beat them dropping the ball or throwing it side to side doesn't really achieve that.

On the line speed.

Gallen does fix that...we miss him there.

He always has good line speed and the others follow, when he is not playing, we sit back and wait.

FTR Valentine would be my one. Robbo and Barba to share the 7.

Only as we have Ennis to direct.

Still have no idea what to do in the oppositions 20.... or maybe any time we have the ball? :?

Being prepared to move the ball on tackle 4 to create some space can work as well.

1 of my pet hates is our 4th tackle options in the opposition 20.

How regularly do we have a forward charge it up & get tackled close to the line. It kills the last tackle option as there can be no depth in a kick & the defence is on top of us too fast.

Spread it a bit on the 4th to run the defence around so that they aren't so set for the last tackle option.

I thought we had Steve Price as our on field coach? We also have Noakesy getting in their ear, so if our game plan is not working those guys should be screaming loudly to adjust it. Can't always blame the players.

How about off the cuff plays we rarely do that, when was last time we tried a chip and chase, Bird has grubbered for himself for success, how about the half trying something.

We play a style that other teams dont have to worry about, we dont try things out of the box often enough, Bird has tried a few times and it works but he needs help from the other half

What would be the point of Robson doing a chip-n-chase?
