Anzac TV war between codes

Well throwing this one open to the forum -

Does anyone have any (serious) suggestions for which games should be fixed in place and when?

For example -

Your club's big rivalry games
Your club's highest drawing games
Scheduling for weather
Synchronising with other events
etc

When the next lot of TV rights come up.

All Melbourne Storm home games should be shown live into Melbourne and Tasmania.

Perth Reds home games should kick off at 4pm WA time every Sunday thus allowing Nine to program them live into WA as a lead into the news whilst also allowing the Eatern states 4pm game to be shown prior to it at 2pm. So 4 hour coverage of league into WA heading into there news. Whilst allowing Fox to pick up the brodcast for Eastern States of the Reds game so we have the opportunity for four hours of game time as well.

Super Saturday I would like to see start at 3pm with a live game on Nine on Free to air. Then Fox have the 5.30pm and 7.30pm games.

Lastly the Sunday games should start at 2pm and 4pm. With Fox having one and Nine doing the other one live.

A whole season draw done at the start of the season and each club getting a certain amount of live exposure on Friday night or Sunday afternoons.

Excellent bump Undertaker!!!

This has been a bug bear of mine for a long time now.

The AFL gets a massive leg up on these special event/public holidays with regards to FTA coverage and it's about time RL joined the party.

I think it's criminal that our ANZAC Day clash is pay tv only when the AFL gets the chance to showcase its ANZAC game on FTA nationally.

Brutus, a lot of ppl on this forum need their memories refreshened and tweaked as they don't realise the EXTENT of how badly we're being screwed over by the TV networks. Most are under the impression that Ch9 have done a good job for the game and look at Foxtel as the anti-Christ because of the whole SL war. Amidst all the petty insults and snide remarks I read on other threads (some by moderators), I applaud ppl like you and docbrown for championing the cause and I believe that both of you, as well as a few other posters (PARRA_FAN is another), have the games' best interest at heart. It's all fun that we learn in high school about what the Nazis and other fascist pigs have done in world's history and we perceive their actions as "dictatorship", yet in the NRL, NRL fans and clubs have allowed Ch9 to dictate and control nearly every aspect of the game for so long. I could run into a whole list of things that have given me the green apple splatters since I started watching league. It's amazing that every other recognised competition in world sport has fixed scheduling and it's only NOW that the idea of fixed scheduling has been suggested. Also, it's completely unacceptable that only 2 out of 8 matches (with the occasional 3rd if the Warriors are playing at home on Sunday) are played during the day. However, these are only two aspects of the much bigger picture though...

Regarding this thread, even the most ardent of league supporters knows that when it comes to ANZAC day, one of the major events that day in this country is the AFL's Collingwood vs Essendon match (which is probably AFL's 2nd biggest match on the calendar after the GF. Probably their equivalent of RL's SOO). It doesn't matter how much you hate AFL (I hate it just as much as the average league supporter on this forum), YOU CANNOT DENY THE FACT that this match gets widespread exposure in the media (even in Sydney and Brisbane), is spoken about amongst many ppl, and craps all over the PROMOTION of our Anzac matches. It's not just a "match"; it is an "event" and that's the pivotal point that docbrown is also trying to stress as well. We only started doing the Roosters/Dragons match in 2002 and the Storm/Warriors match in 2009. The Collingwood/Essendon match began in 1994 (i think), but has always been broadcasted live on FTA Australiawide. Roosters/Dragons has only been on FTA twice (2004 and 2010), Storm/Warriors match never. To be successful in any sales industry, you absolutely need the promotion and exposure and FTA reaches a much larger audience than PayTV. So, come ANZAC day, we just give the AFL a FREE KICK in NRL territory whilst Gallop et al. just sit back and do nothing whilst Vlad is sitting in the MCG members stand eating his souvlakis, laughing at Gallop from a great height, thanking the NRL for being so generous. It's amazing what even just A LITTLE competition does, as was shown in the Sydney and Brisbane tv ratings in 2010 of the AFL ANZAC match (compared to 2009) when the Roosters/Dragons game was shown (albeit only in Sydney and Brisbane after rumours of nationwide coverage, as stated at the beginning of this thread).

Miracles don't happen overnight. We all have to start from somewhere and I'm glad I'm not the only person that is pissed off with

Yep, as soon as Demetriou and co get wind of this they will get in the ear of Gyngell to put a stop to these shenanigans.

They will have to be careful. If Nine lose the NRL, they'll need to stay on side with the AFL. But, if (f**k I PREY) they lose the NRL, they're f**ked.

So far this year we've had Thursday and Sunday night football. Channel Nine could do worse for themselves than to cover the preliminary final rematch and ANZAC Day clash out of Melbourne on a Wednesday and show it live in to Melbourne. They are already committed (or so they say) to showing Storm games on Gem with the possibility of blockbusters (which this sure as shit is) moving to the main Channel.

I might even fire off an email to Ron Gauchi myself and tell him to get in the ear of whoever the f**k matters to make this happen!

Ummm....they're ALREADY ON SIDE with the AFL. They give AFL far more publicity and media attention in the news, have AFL personalities adorned all over 9's programmes, and devote more time to AFL shows than NRL shows. I mean, how is it that during the season, a station without the AFL rights can still get all the high-profiled players and coaches onto their Footy Show for so many years? Ch9 have always been in the AFL's back pocket, going back to the '90s due to the presence of pro-AFL ppl/ppl affiliated with the AFL on Ch9, starting with Eddie McGuire. It's only in the last few years that they've taken it up another notch. It wasn't very long ago, that you, in Sydney, could also get the AFL Footy Show live on their then-HD channel.

The biggest disgrace from last year was that the Rd 24 Storm/Dragons and Rd 25 Sea Eagles/Storm blockbusters weren't shown into Melbourne when they rated its tits off in both Sydney and Brisbane (those two matches were the highest rating regular season matches last year). If they didn't show those two, after committing to showing three live away games on Sunday arvo, I don't hold too much hope in Ch9. Ch9 are akin to the girlfriend you think is perfect in every way when you first start going out with her, only to find out over time that she's an utter fraud, full of broken promises and commitments.

Yes but the abuse directed at Nine on their FB and WWOS profiles was worth the decision!

Does Fox have rights to both those ANZAC Day games?

I just got done firing off an email to Gauci.

I gave it to them deluxe - using facts and citing broken contractual agreements. Was banned from commenting pretty quickly, but the other people on saw and agreed. Enjoyed it immensely.

It always annoyed me that on a public holiday (especially a Monday) that there would be afl on fta but not NRL. There is so much opportunity here but it seems no one wants to take a chance.

An often there's no afternoon NRL game on a holiday Monday (Easter Monday, Queens B'day)

Correct. We used to have Easter Monday arvo game back in the '90s, but it was put into exile after a riot occured at Belmore in '97 (although brought back as a one-off in 2010 when Newcastle played Penrith)

Fox has the rights to the ANZAC matches that don't fall on Friday or Sunday. They did broadcast the Roosters/Dragons on Friday afternoon several years ago (with Eels/Broncos being the Ch9 match later that night), but that was before the 2 FN match system was introduced in 2007.

And how did the email to Guaci go?
