Are Penrith a writeoff in 2017?

Has been for a long time. Uate at his peak was like having an extra prop... and I miss it.

Yep that's a fair point.

People underestimate wingers but they are basically freaks now days. Look at the ridiculous tries they pull out. To use rapana again he turned a shitty kick by Austin into a try against manly.

Also good runs by the wingers on the first two hitups while the forwards get onside is gold. We couldn't play such big props without our physical outside backs.

in pure mathematical terms far from it
4 more points from the bye gives them 8
theres 15 more games left in the season

i think 28 to 30 points gets you into the 8

10/15
they're not done yet , but they'll need to start winning & get a string going in the next few weeks

completely done.If they push throught the next few years they will be good.
But first they need to get rid of Gould, he interferes. He needs to be the coach or stay completely away.

The young players need to be read the riot act and given a good kick up the backside.

You think Gould would have learnt his lesson paying a premium for Brent Kite at the end of his career. He makes the same mistake in paying overs for Tamou who is ageing and on the slide. Two big costly mistakes

Gould should have gone after an aggressive prop who was hungry for a start like Paul Vaughan. Vaughan has plenty of talent and is hungry for success unlike Tamou who has done it all and is easing into retirement.
I am still starching my head as to why they let Matagi go and picked a plodder in Tim Browne.

For me it's paying 2 guys almost 2 million dollars combined a year who play 50 mins a game absolute joke! Merrin and Tamou aren't worth half that based on what they have dished up this year!

I like Penrith I really do as I live in western sydney between Parra and Penrith but they are really struggling which is sad as on paper have a great team

You and us both. We've been pretty good at retaining the bulk of our youngsters (though that will mean shit if they don't have a coach who is able to improve them), but some of our other decisions have been pretty dumb recently:

- signing Korosiau when we already had an in-form Segeyaro, letting him leave early, just before Segeyaro went to shit, and then being forced to move Wallace to hooker.
- signing Wallace to an initial 3 year deal which pretty much stopped us from chasing any other decent halves during that period
- Tamou
- letting Matagi and Latimore leave - which might have made sense if Kikau or Leota were planned to come in permanently - and then just signing Browne to do fill the same role, but just not as well
- Hiku (who I like as a player more than most in our forum), who is now just pretty much standing in the way of Blake and Peachey at centre.
- Whare to a five-year deal (!) a handful of games after coming back from basically two years out with a knee injury - um, how about waiting to see how that knee holds up first?
- f**king Corey Payne. WTF?

And of course, the worst of the lot: friggin' Anthony Griffin. I wasn't too distraught about losing Cleary - he has his definite limitations, as the Tigers will find out eventually. But if I had known that Gould's plan revolved around his hard on for Griffin, I would have been in the Cleary camp all day long.

I would agree with that. Matagi was good for us on the field and he had a close bond with a lot of the players off the field.
Tamou spot on. On the slide.

Wasn't Gould's plan to remove the guys on big contracts and build a team?
Now he's got useless hacks (Merrin, Tamou and to a lesser extent, Moylan) on huge contracts that don't deserve to be fed.

It is possible. Winning 10 from 15 is doable, but the teams in "good form" (not that any team is really in good form) now will only get about that many. And that gets them to 28 which may not get them in to the 8, especially if their F/A is poor (though probably will), and from 8th it is very hard to make any further progress in the finals.

But I agree, not quite the end for them.

I am still leaning towards no, but they really have to make some sort of dramatic change and quickly. Whether that is giving Griffin the flick or not, they're about 1 more loss away from being a complete busted ass in a year when their expectations were sky high. A squad of that quality just can't be glued to the bottom 4 beyond Round 10. That is just an abject failure.

They are not getting their money's worth out of Tamou, who looks like he would rather be anywhere else, Moylan had a decent game tonight but doesn't seem capable of carrying the ship in the halves, their errors are just woeful....Considering the Broncos experience with Hook, you would have to think he is sticking out like a nasty splinter the most at the moment, but looking at who is available to replace him, I dunno man. Tough times ahead for the Pennies.
I like how Broncos fans are so concerned about the welfare of NSW clubs.

Yes. This season was a write off as soon as people started to pick Penrith to be a contender. This club cannot handle expectation historically and it continues to be the case even with this supposedly great roster. Although the weakest link is Griffin and I'd be sacking him right now if it was up to me, but with Gould around, it probably won't be happening.

Panthers will be ok when they get their attack clicking again. As long as it's just an execution problem and not a case of the coach running out of ideas because other teams have worked them out.

It's a case of looking at a set waiting defensive line and 2 square markers after every ruck because of our shit props and one out hit ups every set.

The game plan against Penrith is to just lay on our props for 20 seconds a tackle, they'll let you. Then rush up on the outside of Cleary and Moylan. Game over.

Let's just say they recognise how much they rely on the NSW clubs to support the comp...

I mean, they chucked the toys out of the cot once and had a whole season in their own playpen and look at how popular that was.

This is probably closer to the problem than anything else - Griffin looks more lost than Barrett did in his opening game as coach
