Are we better off if Simmo retires?

Backrow is our strongest position.

Simmo is injured pretty much all the time.

Tough as nails, one of my all time faves, and still hurts plenty of blokes.

But this has to be taking it out of him - he looks old out there.

He apparently owns half of Maitland, so I don't know he needs the dough. Does he really want to put himself through constant pain? Is he doing it for the Knights or for himself?

we are apparently up to our cap (lord knows how..) so the question is, are we better off as a team using his dough for a 7?

His 250k or so could surely get us a half decent 7.

Would it get Mick Monnas back from UK?

.....Todd Carney?

I think he will retire this year. I think he'd be the first to admit he's prob played one season too many. He will go down as one of the clubs greats, I for one wish he does retire, and doesn't leave us with the impression that he hung on too long (Robbie O')

We won't be better off without Simpson as such, but we'd be better off without an ' old ' Simpson for sure.

We'll miss his toughness. He's practically the final remnant of the steely, tough Newcastle Knight local image as we once knew them to be.

I'll miss Simmo, but yes, the times right to move on.

At his best, he is still our best forward - daylight second, but unfortunately his best is few and far between now due to injury/ age.

short answer is yes.

long answer is i'll miss him, i love the bloke, yadda yadda yadda... but he's a shadow of his former self and his salary cap money could be put to far better use these days.

I'd love both Simmo and Cross to announce their retirement right now and give us the money to sign three 'name' forwards or 4 or 5 up and comers - but they are both getting money for nothing next year, so why would they.

I'd prefer they retire next year and give us plenty of notice so we have cash to go out to the market when the market is actually there, rather than having the cash when all the deals are already done. The quality for 2010 is already signed up and done.

Like everyone else I love the guy and what his contributed, however its just plain painful to watch him run around these days.

Yes.

But we gotta use his money to buy some quality.

I'm thinking Sam Burgess quality..

Well hopefully we aren't in a situation ever again where we are offered up a top line UK forward and reject them for concerns about not being good enough.

Hello Gareth Ellis - hello Brian Smith.

Ellis has been totally f*cking killing it in the last month - as good as I've seen any international play at the elite NRL level, far above Morley - and he would have been here at the Knights if a certain head coach considered him any good.

Karawana and Naiqama are good, but Ellis isn't apparently.

Naigama and Karawana would be on about 200k between them. Ellis is on 400k.

I wouldn't mind if simmo retired this year. He's on a good wage, I thought it was around 300k? That money could be spent buying decent a front rower!

Simmo strikes me as the sort of bloke who doesn't go through the motions so if his times up, he'll pull the pin.

That said he deserves the right to go when he's ready. if he thinks he can go around next year then so be it.............. its his call.

$400k is Darren Lockyer Thurston $$$.

For me he would be on $250k at the most.

Have to admit a tad sad, we didnt make a play at Ben Ross, for what he was asking very good value IMO.

Yep it was pretty stupid not to considering the forward depth at the Rabbitohs next year is remarkably stronger than ours so he'd have a much better chance at starting first grade.
