Gallop might have been a numpty but the funny thing is crowds started to come back to the game in his years as head.

Gallop had zero to do with crowds increasing.Gallop couldn't market an ice-cream in a heat wave.

An example: the best crowd year was 2005.
Who was at the top of the NRL ladder?
Eels
Dragons
Broncos
Tigers
Cowboys
All big drawing crowds with fans bases and tv ratings to match.
This year Storm/Manly/Sharks/Roosters and Broncos, only one with a large fan base.

Have to advise you once again, another fail.
I'll tell you what Gallop was good at.Being behind the pack all the time ,never leading the pack.

I agree with you but I look back at that era with fondness as crowds came back to the game from 2002 to the 2nd year of titans existence then after that things started to go Pete Tong with the crowds after 2012 and that was the year the IC came in yet loads of posters were shouting 'show us the money' and saying the game was going to change and it did but not for the better.

Bit selective, fact is most clubs both in the 8 and outside the 8 were drawing better crowds. 2005 had manly, Cronulla and storm in top 8 as well. 7 of the 8 clubs in top 8 are the same in 2005 and 2017.
Of the 7 clubs in the 8 in 2005 and 2017 only Melbourne and Brisbane have better crowds, your theory that it is the clubs in the eight is wrong.

2005
Eels 16,264
Dragons 14,780
Broncos 30,331
Tigers 18,789
Cowboy 20,590
Storm 8,898
Manly 15,171
Cronulla 16,281

2017
Broncos 32,128
Storm 19,041
Roosters 18,406
Cowboys 15,252
Sharks 12,711
Manly 13,293
Eels 14,809
Dragons 12,533

I doubt it had much to do with gallop,,they guy was mr mediocre, but clearly something positive was going on in that 5 years, and clearly something has dramatically changed in the last 5 years.

Selective . LOL.It's the biggest average crowd of the 2000s ,and my point which in typical fashion you ignore ordef as usual deflect,is the biggest clubs with the biggest followings on TV and attendances(when they are in the top half dozen) boost the crowds dramatically.
To suggest otherwise is pure West Coast bulls*t.Mem,berships is also another indication>TV ratings when the clubs are successful.

Do you actually understand the history of rugby league not just from the 2000s but way back to the 70s and 80s and the ensuing years. You spent part of your life in Pommy land and wouldn't have a clue as to the fan base. The NRL,the TV stations.anyone with a historical clue about Australian club rl;,will tell you Eels/Souths/Dragons/Broncos/Tigers and Dogs have the biggest fan base, and this fan base rears its ugly head when they are doing exceptionally well on the fields as many did in 2005.

You can fiddle around with figures, it doesn't alter the facts. In fact you've proved my point, because this year only the Eels(just in the 8) and Broncos are performing as well. And you in typical fashion have ignored Friday nights and Thursday nights, diifferent stadiums, scheduling. The Sharks got 7,900 on a Thursday night against the Storm this year as one example. The Roosters this year got the Anzac day crowd,CC and Adelaide to assist .Seriously mate there are so many variables one can throw at you.

The Sharks/Storm/Panthers/Roosters/Manly cannot rustle up regular crowds like these can, when hugely successful.

You doubt just about anything when it comes to rl.I doubt you are in fact a rl follower.I've listened to and read comments by AFL people(hardly rl fans) with a more positive attitude toward rl,than you.

You can argue about any rl CEO over the decades, they all have had their faults. And guess what any new ones that roll. up,will. have faults. They have this habit of being human with human frailties.Better get used to the fact.Ive been following the code here much longer than you, unless you have been in the 1970s.
Where did all the poker machine money goRarely into infrastructure except your hated Sharks..

An exercise for you check the Oz economy of early 2000s,check the effect of the GFC 2008,check the impact initially of the Titans when they first came in with their great crowds and the ballsup with the Cof E
the crowds at ANZ stadium when Hindmarsh,El Masri retired how many country venues did the game take to the bush in the early years, the worsening situation of Sydney roads congestion acknowledged by everyone who gets behind the wheel here, the current economy and cost of living far greater in Sydney than any other city in this country. It's a combination of many things, bad scheduling the list goes on.That's the reality, whining won't solve it, just irritate the t*ts off everyone.
Who knows !,the light rail from the city viaMoore Park being constructed may assist Allianz Crowds.Your crappy NIB crowd didn't assist NRL averages lately either.

Mate read my response to PR.I'm not going to repeat myself,.You live overseas, you find it hard to appreciate Sydney's crap road infrastructure,NRL scheduling and cost of living.Check the cost of housing ,and you'll get the message, people have only so much to spend.
We had a GFC in 2008,and some people lost a fortune.

I think this also came down to expectation managment, again a huge failure by Gallop...

NRL was run on the smell of an oil rag, but we were all promised that everything would be wonderful after 2013 and everyone would get what they wanted.

Skip forward to 2013. Sure, we have more money, but we are still stuck with a million structural problems that people suddenly became a whole lot less forgiving about.

Gallop knowingly threw the new ARLC a massive hospital pass in 2012, im not at all surprised he was out on his ass after like 2 months...

ARLC appoints two new Commissioners
Tue 25 Jul, 2017, 10:33am
Media Release, NRL

The ARL Commission today announced the appointment of two new Commissioners to fill the current vacancies.

Professor Megan Davis and the Honourable Peter Beattie AC will join the Commission immediately.

Chairman John Grant said the appointments would significantly strengthen the Commission.

He said Professor Davis is one of the nation’s leading constitutional lawyers who has had a long and distinguished international diplomatic career as well as being a champion of Indigenous and women’s rights.

She is also a passionate Rugby League fan who grew up in country Queensland, where rugby league was at the centre of her community.

"It is a privilege and honour to be invited to become an ARL Commissioner," Professor Davis said.

Mr Beattie was Premier of Queensland from 1998 until 2007, making him one of the State’s most successful political leaders.

During this period he was a strong advocate for Rugby League and was responsible for the construction of Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium and the Gold Coast’s Cbus Stadium.

"I have a great love of Rugby League and I am excited about the prospect of working with the Commission to make the game even greater," Mr Beattie said.

Mr Grant said that with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, finalisation of the club funding and licence agreement, constitutional reform, and the NRL’s digital presence likely to all be completed by year end, the pair were joining the Commission for the next exciting stage of the game’s development.

"I have no doubt these appointments will give the Commission additional expertise and insight as it looks to capitalise on the foundations that have been put in place over the last six years," he said.

Beattie actually seems like a pretty solid candidate...

Obviously most of the commissioners dont like the spotlight, so a chairman that takes it all is probably a good thing. Also, the fact that he was QLD Premier for a decade proves he is able to balance interest groups. And, if nothing else, he will be good in our next inevitable PR crisis.

Leaving aside political allegiances (i genuinely hate John Howard, but i was still sad when we didnt get him for the original commission), Beattie is undoubtedly worth the risk and will probably be at least relatively successful...

Bollocks. I spelt out the reasons( of which there are many) for the differences. .
And the point about popularity was shown at a special event when the Eels and Tigers drew 30,000 last weekend. And big crowds for farewells for special players in the last decade plus.

I have spelt out the various IMO reasons for the ups and downs viz a viz scheduling, where they played the game bush or local, where in the top 8 and how have they been performing in 2017 compared to 2005.,no friday night 6 pm and Thursday nights in 2005,and what has been happened since with economy in Sydney, transport infrastructure, the increasingly unpopular ANZ stadium, membership numbers. The fact you don't understand the whole shebang doesn't surprise me living in your AFL bubble out west. You do understand also not every team plays each other twice.

You like to cite 2005 as the peak and the crowds declining since.Yet you blatantly ignore historical facts about Sydney clubs which have the biggest supporter bases .Those big supporter bases are affected by monetary issues , consistency of play even with their position on the ladder etc etc.
You ignore the fact the media,NRL ,fans know which clubs have the biggest supporter bases.

You obviously know more about AFL than the ARL/NRL.

I just talking about crowds from my view and yES i live oversea's but find the NRL more exciting then Super League.

Look I'm the first to acknowledge I hate crowd averages dropping, and participation levels ditto.
As far as crowds and popularity ,firstly the clubs with the biggest fan bases are a factor whether we like it or not and one certainly can't handle that fact, especially in Sydney as to the impact on averages.

I have listed what i believe are the reasons crowds remain down, and I'm coming to the conclusion the economy and its uncertainty, transport chaos all affect clubs such as I mentioned ,with the bulk in the western suburbs of Sydney.ANZ stadium has become under its present configuration a pariah.

The guy from the west can sit back and play the critic it's easy, but does he have to organise a huge mortgage just to live in a house or unit in Sydney,or pay the exorbitant rents here compared to Perth.I can sit back and do cmptr modelling, that doesn't get you out into the real world of people living week to week, many no doubt following those teams.

He's a snake-oil salesman who lurched from one crisis to the next the whole time he had the reins. The only reason he wasn't tossed is that the Opposition were hopeless, still are.

Changes to the ARL Commission could open old wounds
Rugby league is slowly edging towards an overhaul of the independent commission in a move that could reopen old wounds between its chairman John Grant and the clubs.

Grant earlier this week announced two new commissioners — former Queensland premier Peter Beattie and constitutional lawyer Megan Davis — to take the number of independent commissioners to eight.

However, under the proposal for constitutional reform, the number of independent commissioners would be reduced to six, with the states and clubs to have two representatives apiece on a 10-person body.

Grant, who has already announced he will depart in February when his term comes to an end, and Catherine Harris are expected to make way as part of the overhaul.

However, both are also believed to be eager to remain in their positions until February. The clubs and states are expected to push for the new structure as soon as they can agree on a fresh draft of the constitution, which they are currently thrashing out.

The Queensland Rugby League has raised a handful of issues with the latest draft but they are not considered insurmountable and there is genuine hope an agreement can be reached sooner rather than later.

That will be the precursor to the clubs and states potentially pushing for an extraordinary general meeting where they will attempt to drive through constitutional change and have their own nominees named on the commission.

At the same time, two of the independents will be forced to stand down. Grant has given no indication that he is willing to leave before February, meaning Harris and another commissioner may be on the chopping block to reduce the independents to six.

Grant would then leave in February, leaving a fresh vacancy for an independent. At the same time, Beattie is expected to step into the role as chair. Despite concerns among some clubs at the prospect of another Queenslander sitting on the commission’s throne, the clubs and states ultimately have no say over the appointment of the chair. The position is decided by the independent members of the commission.

Constitutional reform has been on the agenda for months but the issue is drawing to a close after the QRL provided its response to club delegate Nick Pappas on Tuesday night.

It is understood the body raised concerns over several matters, including the procedure required to approve and remove commissioners, and the chair having a casting vote.

It is also understood the draft constitution provides for the ability to remove and approve commissioners with a simple majority vote. The QRL would like to increase that threshold.

The QRL has previously stated its opposition to the chair being given a casting vote and its position hasn’t changed.

QRL chairman Bruce Hatcher also made it clear it was sick of being treated as an afterthought. Its sense of being viewed as a second-class citizen in the code wasn’t helped by the process that led to the appointment of Beattie and Davis. While a selection of club officials were told of the imminent appointments, the states were kept in the dark.

“All we are saying is that things need further debate,” Hatcher said. “We are the last cab off the rank. We want to be taken as a serious stakeholder. It comes back to trust and respect.”

The clubs are expected to digest the latest concerns of the QRL this week before they attempt to reach some form of compromise.

Hatcher and NSW Rugby League chairman George Peponis will join the commission as representatives of the states while the clubs will vote on nominations for their two positions.

Furthermore PR as you throw up 2017 ladder ,compared to 2005 with the teams involved,I'm talking Sydney popular teams .

2005
Eels 1
Dragons 2
Tigers 4
Dogs 12
Souths 13

2017
Eels 7th
Dragons 8th both just scraping in to the 8 and being inconsistent with form
Dogs 13th
Souths 14th
Tigers 15th

If you can't see a massive deterioration in positions on the ladder and form for the Sydney clubs with the biggest fan bases, then sorry, I am not an Optometrist so I can't help you.
Where is the biggest drop off in crowds and TV ratings ..........fill in the city blanks. As someone stated it's not the NRL with crowd issues it's the Sydney teams.

Those results are one of many reasons for the crowd situations well as the others.
Maybe we should have a centralised
old fashioned Perth NIB stadium at Breakfast Creek and the NRL crowds would flock there in their 10s of thousands.

When i told my dad that Beattie was one the commission he groans and seemed to really hate the idea. No idea how much of a merkin of a politician he was but at least he knows the game unlike that Dave Smith wanker and is passionate about the game.
