RIP!

There should be a state funeral for the first Aboriginal captain of an Australian national side, rugby league immortal and all-round Aussie character.

Totally agree.

RIP Artie ...

Had the pleasure of meeting the big fella on a couple of occasions, and hear some amazing yarns.
Thanx for the memories.

RIP Artie - a legend of the game. I admired his skill, passion & kindness. He had a massive impact on and off the field, inspiring many and especially the indigenous.

I didn't agree with a lot of things that he had to say. But he was a great rugby league identity. He will be missed and this will be marked as a sad day in rugby league history.

RIP Artie.

What did he say that was so onerous to you?

RIP Artie.

Put many young indigenous kids on the right path with his contacts in the game, his loss will be felt.

One of the saddest days in Rugby League. :(

To lose an immortal of the game, really breaks anyones heart. Not just league supporters.

Been speaking to a few people about him and they dont follow Rugby League but thinks its really sad news.

Beetson is no doubt a legend of the game.

Unfortunately never saw him, but I remember his coaching and commentating in the early 90s for ABC.

John Peard, a very good mate and co-commentator, said in a story they were calling a Sat afternoon game in Newcastle and Beetson was blasting the referee.

"If thats a forward pass I will walk from here to Sydney"

Peard said back while on the sidelines "Well Artie there is a sidewalk on the F3 wont take you too long"

I can remember his speech after he was named an Immortal in 2003. Was shown on Channel 9 and spoke very well.

Said that was one of the best achievements was captaining Australia and winning a premiership at the same time.

Also remember the following year when both he and Jack Gibson carried the Olympic torch and were interviewed after a Friday night game. They both shared some great stories and couldve gone on for hours.

A very good bloke, and such a shame to loss a bloke like Artie.

We will miss him. Rest in Peace Artie.

An absolute colossus of the game - rest in peace big man.

As a player, he had it all....his ball play before and through the line was phenomenal....he was deceptively quick over 20 metres and as tough as they come.

Would've loved to have seen him in the modern game with full time training and the 10 metre rule.

A great loss and I think it goes beyond sport. I agree on the earlier call for a state funeral.

The least he deserves.

Legend of the game and the indigenous community, but overrated in terms of being a legend in origin having only played 3 games.

good idea.

The achievements of Australia's early Aboriginal sportsmen cannot be under-rated. (not that they are). Big Artie has left a large legacy for the Aboriginal people. R.I.P mate.
