Similar, both have one gun Brazilian attacking midfielder, a small yet effective keeper and an aging defence.

England 0 - 1 Spain.

The pressure on Steve McClaren is still on. A toothless, disjointed display against Spain at Old Trafford resulted in a defeat that will be blamed on another poor performance under the former Boro boss. Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta struck a wonderful 62nd minute goal past Ben Foster, the Watford keeper making his debut.
There's also a poll on the front page at soccernet right now.

Title - It's obvious Englands midfield can't play together, but who should go?

Lampard
Gerrard
McClaren

Lampard 31%
Gerrard 6%
McClaren 63%

I laughed when they appointed Steve Mclaren. He is even more of a laughing stock now. The man is useless and what he did to deserve the England job is beyond me.

England need to get serious, I mean Sven and Mclaren are clowns and they need to get rid of the latter straight away.

I think Massimo Maccarone summed it up best in his rant after leaving Middlesbrough:

"The ever-smiling Steve "Magnificent" McClaren is without doubt the most two-faced and false person that I have ever had the misfortune to meet in football, who should first spend his time actually trying to understand his own players' mentality instead of wasting so much time trying to understand the English press. The training methods at Middlesbrough are a quarter of a century out of date. Only in England could such a man with such obvious and limited abilities be made national coach"

anyone else catch the game this morning

it was a bit of a snoozefest

the poms have a very defensive style of play and seem to take forever to set up attacking opportunities

i'd take Cesc Fabregas over both players anyday of the week :)

Who wouldn't? He is already established himself as the best centre midfielder in the game. All the other greats playing at the moment are Attacking midfielders (Ronaldinho, C Ronaldo, Kaka, Gerrard, Rosicky) Fabregas is better than Lampard and he is only 19. Good on him. My favourite player in the world.

I'm glad he's at Arsenal for another 8 years (i think).

2 of them (Fabregas and Gerrard) were selected in the uefa.com team of the year (2006).

Nearly 4 million votes were cast and the team is -

Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)
Gianluca Zambrotta (FC Barcelona)
Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid CF)
Carles Puyol (FC Barcelona)
Philipp Lahm (FC Bayern München)
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool FC)
Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal FC)
Kaká (AC Milan)
Ronaldinho (FC Barcelona)
Thierry Henry (Arsenal FC)
Samuel Eto'o (FC Barcelona)
Coach: Frank Rijkaard (FC Barcelona)

That's one hell of a team! If Cannavaro wasn't suffering from the Real Madrid kiss of death then this team would have an unpassable defence.

Real Madrid is horrible. Few players go there and succeed. Raul is one of them but even now he has suffered by a lack of game time when he is better than the strikers starting at Real Madrid.

McLaren is nothing but a puppet.

I can't believe they appointed him in the first place.

Yup, it's sad. Although we were bad today, I think the lads are playing slightly within themselves to get McLaren sacked.

We could've made a play for Scolari or Hiddink, but no...

actually, the english FA did make a play for both those guys, but were told top get farked.

Hiddunk said he just wasnt interested in england because of all the tabloid crap, Scolari actually told them before the world cup he was happy to talk once he was finished with Portugal, and he asked them to keep it quiet so as not to disrupt him prior and during the wc....so what happened, the fa went public so he said, well sod off then lol

problem with the english side is they have to pick english.

Most of those guys are average at best....and get dragged along and bath in reflected glory of all the imports they play with in the epl.

ie...if you were making a list of say, top 10 strikers in the epl....who many would be english?

[My top 10 EPL strikers are (in no particular order):

Henry (Arsenal) (France)
Drogba (Chelsea) (Ivory Coast)
Bent (Charlton) (England)
van Persie (Arsenal) (Nederlands)
Rooney (Manchester United) (England)
Saha (Manchester United) (France {I think})
Martins (Newcastle) (Nigeria)
Anelka (Bolton) (France)
Kuyt (Liverpool) (Nederlands)
Cristiano Ronaldo* (Manchester United) (Portugal)

*That's if you consider him a striker
**Carew will soon be one of the EPL's best. He'll suit Aston Villa
***Schevchenko is one of the best strikers but based on form he isn't in the top 10.

Only 2 of my strikers are English.
