Now that the Auckland 9's have been a success, Im glad people are already thinking of taking the tournament to places where RL rarely gets a mention, or is virtually unknown.

Next is the moon?

1 small step for man....

Don't go too big, too fast or the downhill slide is quicker.

Marwan Koucash is behind that bid for a UAE 9's.

if its in addition to the NZ version well and good, and more of an international flavour.

the nines should stay in auckland permanantly, now and build up from here

brisbane's attempt to gazzump the event wont do much for the game there.

the response of the public has already shown its a very popular tournament for NZ

indeed it will soon surpass the wellington 7s in popularity, as the empty seats at the latter this year, for the first time in ages is an indication where the fan's interest was.

the 9s V 7s battle will be interesting. Can 9s win? Do we need to continue to evolve our event? How will 7s respond? Will they focus on being family friendly like the NRL (closing bars early, limits on alcohol, earlier finish time...) or will they emphasise their partyness?

7's should stick to the party angle. Best thing about the 7's is the street party afterwards where you can have a few beers and talk shit with the players.

Unfortunately Rugby League fans are a selfish bunch. They complain when they lose players through injury in non-premiership matches, they complain when players are lost overseas or to other codes, they complain about the salary cap being too low, they complain about the League not bailing them out etc etc. But when the League actually places measures in to try and build the game's pie so those complaints can be countered, those same fans are content that their club/s are not sending their stars to compete in anything apart from the NRL premiership that could help build that pie significantly.

Logic at its best!

Next thing it'll be a player thats gets injured in Round 1, "Should scrap Round 1".

I dont know about fans, but all this whinging is from the media, saying the 9's is too risky and coaches are worried about sending their best player in a mini tournament.

Injuries happen all the time, no matter what, its just bad luck or stupidity.

Wasnt there a Penrith player years ago who done his knee cause he was wrestling with his mate in the backyard?

Jack Wighton put himself out for the rest of the season in 2012 after getting his toe caught in a trampoline and David Kidwell did his knee playing with his daughter.

I say ban players from having children

I think that was Kidwell at either Souths or Storm.

Shane Rodney did his shoulder (i think) at home while playing for Penrith. Slipped on his deck or something . Missed the better part of 2 years.

Girdler missed the better part of a season after playing "run at me" with his brother. It was kept pretty quiet as to why he was out injured at the tme though. Cant remember the year exactly, 98 or 99 or thereabouts.

So who's more likely to get injured, the guy playing in the 9s or the guy watching it on TV?

I'm happy with the Raiders decision to send over a B-grade squad. Injuries aside, it gave our up & comers some good exposure.

Besides, the Cowboys took it out without their best player and also losing their fullback.

Of course, but at least the benefits are there, if you get injured training for something real, you can deal with that, it happens.

But you get nothing out of the nines, nothing tangible can be translated to the 13 a side man. To my mind, that fact in itself very much makes a difference to how and where the injury happens

If im risking my star players, i want to be risking them for something that can HELP my side win a premiership, not risking them for something that even 5 days later most people have forgotten and moved on to more important things.

I was pleased when Stuart named a bare bones 9's team, i was pleased when the players selected played seemingly to avoid injury and for fun only, and i was pleased to hear they all returned home without so much as a bruised shin out of it. We got 110k for that. The knights got 130k and lost Mullen for maybe 4 months.

You reckon the knights wouldnt give that 20k back right now to get a healthy Mullen?
Naming a full strength team wouldnt even neccasarily result in a serious chance. The Dragons pretty much named every with an ounce of ability and they ran last.

These are the risks, some teams are willing to assume then, some aren't, im pleased Stuart was not willing to take that risk. The Raiders are going to be flat out winning football games full stength this year, let alone had we lost a player like Cornish or Wighton (had he played) for a long period.

But i want to make this clear, i am a fan of the concept, i want it to stick around. To me is was a good fun couple of days. But you've got to understand that some teams and coaches will take this thing seriously, and others wont. And their teams will deal with the consequences of that decision. That's the nature of the beast. Legislating like some have suggested to include more of the big stars is only going aliniate the teams and elite players who dont want to be involved, further from the idea and create more opposition to it.

If the product we saw last weekend is what we saw for the next 5 years, who would care? The product was great, basically every game was exciting, we got to see some young stars in the making in the place of older one.

The thing played itself out really well. I see no reason to change it but i wouldnt be suprised is a club like Newcastle change their attitude to it next year (i also wont be surprised if they dont), and that's the nature of it

No they aren't, the benefits aren't there because they're sitting on the sideline, injured. And my point was that it doesn't make a lick of difference how or why that injury happened, because injuries just happen. The end result is still the same.

A guy rupturing his ACL during an "important trial game" is still as useless to you as a guy who ruptured his ACL in the nines.

You should rest your players all season so they don't get injured for the finals.

I'm sure you guys had a great time watching the tourny and your spastic team.

lol our spastic team came away with as many wins as your team of heroes.

The funny thing is, we could rest all of our players against the Dragons and beat them.

Your first grade squad is b-grade
