I would definitely argue Jaques is a worse fielder.

And Katich is very good close to the bat. Put him at short leg and he's almost Boon-esque in there.

Katich's left arm wristies could also come in handy in the subcontinent.

But lets be fair. On those dusty, spinning, slow subcontinental wickets we REALLY REALLY need sh*thouse medium-fast bowling from Watson over solid part time spin from a guy like Katich!

What is the bloody logic of going into a test in INDIA with three quicks and a medium-fast bowling all rounder?

Small problem Timbo..Jaques, Ponting and Mike Hussey are better in close. Katich dropped how many catches against the Windies again..was it 10 or something like that, including Chanderpaul twice. As for Watson it is more about balance, he is avery good fielder, bowls well, and bats just as well (plus he is hot!). In the end though Michael Clarke can bowl spin anyway if we are that desperate. I would rather a genuine all-rounder at 6, now although Watson is not a genuine all-rounder he is the best we have got. I'd rather Dave Hussey over Katich as he is just as good a bat and a better spinner/fieldsman

Sunshine may surprise us on this tour if he plays tests
He is way different to what he was a few years back. He should go alright as a batsman
He can also actually be quite quick when he bowls, could be real handy if he can get it on a good length and line, and doubly valuable if we look to play two spinners in a test or two in the series

He and punter will deserve to get bagged mercifully if Sunshine fails

Having said that, Katich will be very unlucky to miss out on a top 6 spot

I don't know about that. Can Simon drink 53 cans on a plane flight to England and still perform?

Whilst Katich is a sharp fieldsman in close, I don't think he is in the same league as Boon or Justin Langer. And close-in has tended recently to become the new-guy's spot too.

McGain no chance for first Test

October 01, 2008
SPINNER Bryce McGain has been ruled out of contention for Australia's first Test against India next week with a shoulder injury.

The Victorian leggie was considered the leading candidate to make his Test debut in Bangalore after incumbent Beau Casson was overlooked for the tour.

However he was ruled out when he pulled up sore after testing his strained shoulder in the nets in Hyderabad on Tuesday ahead of the four-day match against a President's XI starting Thursday.

Young Tasmania off-spinner Jason Krejza now appears set to make his Test debut when the first Test starts at Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday week.

McGain injured the shoulder playing for Australia A on their tour to India last month.

From the reports of Krejza hes an attacking spinner that can give it a good rip. All we can do now is hope. He does add to the batting.

Katich has shown hes still in good form, he should be in there over the untired Watson whose bowling won't be much use in this surface anyway.

Krejza really gives it a rip, he is not the worst. I couldn't believe it when NSW kept Hauri and let him go to Tassie. And he can bat too.

he flights the ball well, but he's only a finger spinner

he'll be fodder for the Indians at home

Agreed on all points PB. But that is the thing with selections, you get some right and some wrong. Jaques is the one under pressure though- Katich is a perfect opener in India

1. Jaques
2. Hayden
3. Ponting
4. Hussey
5. Clarke
6. Katich
7. Haddin
8. Krejza
9. Lee
10. Clark
11. Bollinger

That is the side I want to see, but Watson and Johnson will make it unfortunately.

Why was Siddle picked over Bollinger for the tour match? It better be injury as no way Bollinger deserves not to be able to bowl for a spot in the 11.

Heard on the radio that Sunshine pulled out of the tour game due to a virus  He is still a softcock. And Ponting wants this wimp in the test side.

The selectors must think the Indian conditions suit Siddle similar to how they suited Kasprowicz.
Aus playing 5 bowlers and Katich and Hayden are openers, Jaques not playing.

Ind Pres XI 3/85
Siddle 1/9 (5)....8 runs in lucky edges to 3rd man
Johnson 1/25 (6)
Clark 1/31 (8)

Krejza looks like he will play in the first test

Also looks like Casson may join the tour party of McGain doesnt come good, he cant bowl for another 2-3 weeks

Lots of talk from Krejza, Id be a bit quieter if I was him, having a FC record of 45 per wicket isnt gonna send the death of fear to anyone. He could get spanked on this tour imo

Krejza not intimidated by India

Cricinfo staff

October 2, 2008

Jason Krejza, the uncapped offspinner, is confident he can make a success of his likely Test call-up after Bryce McGain was ruled out of the opening match in Bangalore with a shoulder injury. It leaves Krejza as the only fit specialist spinner in Australia's squad and he is now set to become the country's 402nd Test cricketer.

He arrives on the international scene with a modest domestic record; he has 43 first-class wickets at 45.46 from 23 matches mostly with New South Wales and Tasmania. However, Krejza has a reputation as an aggressive spinner and a big turner of the ball, and he said he would not be intimidated by India's batsmen.

"I am confident that I can come over here and be successful, that is why I targeted this tour," Krejza told the Age. "If I can spin it hard and get it in the right areas, get a few big wickets, that would be great.

"I'm not intimidated, because bowling to our guys, Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting and the others, it isn't much different. They treat spinners as Indians do, very, very aggressively. I have confidence that I've got the skills to do it."

Krejza, 25, is also keen to try out his version of the doosra. "I've been working on it for four or five years," he said. "It will definitely come out this series, because I want to keep these Indian batsmen on their toes."

Krejza collected 3 for 35 in the weekend's tour game against the RCA Centre of Excellence, which was his first chance to bowl in match conditions in India. He was on the recent Australia A tour but rain prevented him bowling a ball.

It was also during the Australia A games that McGain picked up his shoulder strain, a niggle that has lasted much longer than he initially expected. Although McGain will remain with the squad until he can be properly assessed, the team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris believes it will be two to three weeks before he will be able to bowl, meaning a flight home is a strong possibility.

That would be good news for Beau Casson, the left-arm chinaman bowler who made his Test debut in the Caribbean but was overlooked for the squad for India as the selectors wanted one wrist-spinner and one finger-spinner. Casson suffered a minor injury when he slipped in the outfield on the Australia A trip but he said if the call came for him to replace McGain he would jump at the chance.

"I'll be ready if needed, absolutely," Casson told the Daily Telegraph. "That was the reason for missing a few games with Australia A in India, because I wanted to get back on the park as soon as possible.

"I've had [physio] Pat Farhart weave some of his magic and the groin has responded really well. I've played three games of cricket since and, being one-dayers, I've had to move from side to side a fair bit, so I couldn't be happier with the way I'm feeling."
