What is the issue with that? We have four batsman that have rarely contributed in the last 18 months and even though Smith will only ever be as good as a part time spinner is still superior to anything we have bar O'Keefe. I would have Smith replace North to do the job as a batsman and tweak his leggies when required.

What he said.

Thats fine if you bat him at 6 and tell his primary job is runs - wickets a bonus.

But if you bat him at 8 and tell him wickets are the priority and runs are a bonus then you'll wreck the kid. I really rate him as a batsmen - he's better than his stats. In fact I think his batting stats are being hurt by the fact there is all the pressure on him to be the next Warne when he could be the next Waugh. :)

For Adelaide I'd go:

Watson
Katich
Ponting
Clarke (Khawaja if injured)
Hussey
Smith
Haddin
O'Keefe
Harris
Hilfenhaus
Bollinger

I agree with the potential to wreck the kid and in the future I think we could do well with Smith at 6 and O'Keefe as the spinner which effectively gives us 6 genuine bowlers with Watson in the team aswell we can still pick our three quicks, a spinner, an all rounder and a change up leggie.

His only role IMO is to bat at 6 and score runs then bowl 15 or so overs.

Dump North and Johnson, bring in Bollinger and Ferguson, Khawaja, or Smith. Keep Doherty in the side and use Smith as an allrounder (like Johnson) so we have dual spinners permanently. Love dual spinners. Alternatively an out and out batsman. Hussey has probably saved himself for the next 3-6 months.

Drop North and Johnson, Bring in Smith and Bollinger. Give Doherty another chance at least.

If I was a selector I'd be telling Hussey to retire at the end of the series, hopefully while he's enjoying a bit of a resurgence before he goes back into decline again. I'd be telling Ponting too, unless he gets plenty of runs this series he should seriously look at retiring before next summer.

Really they should not be picking 35 year olds unless they are world beaters and at the top of their game.

Agreed. Knowing the selectors Hussey will be there for 6 months again which is why I said he has saved himself. Ponting needs to be dropped down to 5 and lose the captaincy I think before he gets punted. I'd do that post series though. Worse possible time to drop your captain and lose your regular first drop. I agree about the 35 year olds. Unless it was Hodge who is in unbelievable form.

For Adelaide:

Watson
Katich
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin
Smith
Doherty
Siddle
Hilfenhaus
Bollinger

If the Poms lose a wicket they should send in the tailenders with instructions to sacrifice their wickets to Mitchell - a couple of wickets should guarantee his place for the rest of the series :D

The side for Adelaide should be:

Katich
Hughes
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Watson
Haddin
O'Keefe
Harris
Siddle/Hilfenhaus
Bolllinger

*We need Watson to bowl more, hence a drop down the order
*Siddle probably gets saved by his fluke first inning performance, but otherwise Hilfenhaus should be in who would be a much better bowler with a much better supporting cast.

Hughes isn't playing that well at the moment. O'Keefe might be a little raw. I like the side though.

Watson would have had three wickets today IF
* we could catch
* and Ponting decided to have more than one slip in place

In Pontings defence it is 493/1

There's no defence for the catches - especially Johnson's and Clarke's woeful
