 Didn't quite want to shoot myself in the face, but agree on the sentiments - incredibly good special effects coupled with a ho-hum story that doesn't offer any surprises.

A long way from the best movie ever, but by far the best special effects I've ever seen.

 yeah, maybe a bit of an exaggeration. But for the second half of the movie I was just enjoying the graphics and effects (and testing out what it looks like without the 3D glasses :D) because I knew what was gonna happen.

Saw it 3D Imax last week. Brilliant visuals.
I agree the story was predictable, but I enjoyed it just the same.
First modern 3D movie I've seen so that was different for me.
Very cool.

Yeah im gonna have to agree with most peoples thoughts on this one. Absolutely outstanding special effects with a pretty ok storyline, but i do think a lot of people are being a bit harsh on the story, its not the most original idea in the world but it certainly isnt crap. For me, the special effects more than makes up for anything lacking in the story.

i came out of the movie a few weeks ago and thought it was a solid movie with a technical breakthrough.. but every day since then i've found myself to be slowly hating the movie more and more

comments from ignorant nutters such as, "BEST MOVIE EVER!" and others whoattempt to refute the opinions of so called 'trolls' for blasting the lack of originality in Avatar.. have ignited such a response from myself

i'll try to remain calm.

just saw it in 3D

Up there with the best fantasy sci fi type movies ever made.

The music was a bit wishy washy though....no cracking star wars type theme music

Reality leaving Avatar fans feeling blue

resizer.aspx

It isn't only the Na'vi who are feeling blue. (AAP)
From the Fix

Thousands of Avatar fans have reported feeling depressed and even suicidal at the prospect of never being able to visit the mystical planet depicted in the movie.
One of the biggest internet forums for the hit film has received more than a thousand posts on a thread entitled 'Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible', CNN reports.
The forum has shown a marked comedown from experiencing the computer-generated utopia depicted in the film to the real world for many Avatar fans.
The fictional planet of Pandora is shown as a beautiful fantasy world where the native inhabitants, the Na'vi, have a close bond with nature.
"After I watched Avatar at the first time, I trully felt depressed as I 'wake' up in this world again," one forum user wrote.
Another commenter said the film gave him "a physical dependency to see Pandora and live there, and if you don't see it you get uber depressed."
Meanwhile, the movie is attracting accusations of being racist by critics in the US by portraying a white man coming in to lead a community of primitive, non-white people.
"It rests on the stereotype that white people are rationalist and technocratic while colonial victims are spiritual and athletic," New York Times columnist David Brooks wrote.
"It rests on the assumption that non-whites need the White Messiah to lead their crusades."
But director James Cameron denied the film had an racist undertones, saying Avatar "asks us to open our eyes and truly see others, respecting them even though they are different, in the hope that we may find a way to prevent conflict and live more harmoniously on this world". "I hardly think that is a racist message," he added.
Already taking in more than $1.5 billion in ticket sales since its release last month, Avatar is well on track to become the biggest selling movie of all time.
Directed by James Cameron of Titanic and Terminator fame, the sci-fi blockbuster stars Australian actor Sam Worthington.
The film is also considered a heavy favourite to scoop the pool in the Golden Globes and Academy Awards.

I enjoyed it. I saw it in Gold Class and had a couple of beers and some deep fried snacks.

Storyline was more than a tad cliched, but really...so what? Sometimes I like to switch off in movies and Avatar was exactly that kind of movie. Visually stunning.

Worthington's accent grated on my nerves but I couldn't help feel a stirring in my loins for that blue skinned Princess. Jessica Rabbit, move over...you've been replaced.
