Visually stunning. Plot was reasonably predictable but the characters were quite well done.

Some parts of the climax I thought were a bit iffy, but pretty good.

Unfortunate that some of the reviewers are going over the top about it but a very good film that should be seen at a cinema and in 3d.

Saw in it in 3D and as you'd expect, it is a visual masterpiece. I thought the plot was good, not great. Tad predictable, but most movies are these days. I'd give it a 8/10 simply for the epic visual display.

I liked it, it could have been one of my favorites of all time with a few tweaks to the screenplay (some of the writing reminded me too much of Titanic) but it was still very good.

It was obvious Cameron was inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's work, particularly Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Loved it.

Yeah, there were a couple of cringeworthy quotes and moments that could have had cynics rolling their eyes. But if you just go into the movie with the intention of enjoying it for what it is and a great storyline, you won't be disappointed.

I absolutely hate sci-fi. Couldn't stand The Matrix or Star Wars. But Avatar is probably one of my favourite movies. I only saw it in 2D so I'm keen to go see it again in 3D soon.

Indeed.

Enjoyed Fern Gully. Good to see Worthington doing well, seems like a decent guy in interviews, certainly not full of himself yet anyway.

I fail to see how the storyline was weak.

Granted it had a predictability to it, but the storyline obviously has that universal appeal about it which some people don't seem to like perhaps because it comes across as abit too sentimental.

But the story as well as the characters were nevertheless engaging and it almost goes without saying that its the most visually stunning movie ever created.

An amazing movie and Cameron is a true master.

I'm finding it hard to get excited too.

Frankly I am over CGI "epics".... What is epic about creating hoards of computerised actors on a computer?

Still going to see this though, since its Cameron and he hasn't steered me wrong yet (although True Lies was pretty weak by his standards)

Well I was completely wrong!

Saw this last night in 3D at hurstville.... just WOW.

The movie starts off slow, sure, but honestly I think Cameron did that on purpose to allow the audience to get used to the 3D before any of the real story starts.

There was times that I had to remind myself that I was looking at a completely CGI character and not at a real person, and the battle scenes at the end truly looked amazing, which is normally where CGI falls over.

As for the actual plot, completely predictable and by the numbers for sure, but who said a great plot needs to be a completely original one.

Will see it again at Imax for sure.

Saw it yesterday and was a bit meh on it to be honest. Visually stunning as others have said and felt there was a political undertone criticisng white man for conquering the native indians in America and the Aboriginals in Australia. In fact, I'm sure I heard the word Aboriginal used in the movie when describing the indigenous population.

Can anyone confirm this as I saw an interview with Cameron after he made Aliens and he said the undertone was the Vietnam war where a superior force struggled to cope with a foe who were only interested in survival.

I took my 2 boys to watch this.
I found it ok but have to admit I did nod off for about 10 minutes.
My sons however loved it.
My 9 year old said it was the best movie he'd ever seen.
Told him he'd see better for sure but he has seen too many movies for his age.
His 11 year old brother loved it too.
Thought its a DVD I'll be getting for sure for them but note we watched a trailer on the small screen and my eldest son was far from impressed. He wanted me to take him back to the cinema again the next day to watch it again.

I really didn't enjoy it. The story is completely boring and has been done numerous times before. The characters were all boring cliches with the exception of the main character. As legend pointed out they push the evil white man having no respect for nature/indigenous culture barrel heaps. Which is fine, but the allegory is so obvious and so repetitive it really becomes a distraction. Same with the themes of U.S. foreign policy in the middle east.

I've gotta say I wasn't blown away by the visuals, although obviously I was very impressed (in fairness I was close-ish to the front, it might have been better from further back). Certain things that happened really annoyed me, like:
In a time when man can travel to another solar system, they are incapable of making arrow-proof glass.

If you're in military prison awaiting trial for treason, there will be one guard between you and the front door.

If you're a mech warrior robot, why the f**k do you need a knife?

Also the ending

Dragged on for wayyyy too long, there was a pretty cool build up to the first attack scene, but then the human ship just pulls away and the rest of the movie feels a bit flat.
Overall I'd give it about a 4/10 for pretty cool visuals and some reasonable action scenes.
