Awesome Melbourne ratings, poor Sydney GF ratings

I got 1 message from someone last night whinging about how boring the game was but at work no one has said anything of the sort. Which is a positive given everyone was talking about it this morning.

All I can say is "what game were they watching?" :?

I watched the game in the near-packed sports bar at Crown Casino and thought it was an excellent match. Very intense, lots of ball movement, but alas a finish that the locals were not hoping for.

I thought the game was more interesting that the Tigers-Cowboys GF in 2005. And higher in standard (ie less drop-ball etc) that Bulldogs-Roosters in 2004.

Good to see that Melbourne got behind the Storm. Hopefully that will force the NRL & Channel Nein to actually take the sport seriously in Victoria in future.

Guess that finally answers the question of the most dominant footy code in Australia? RL has always counterd the attendance at games argument by having a bigger TV audience. Now we have finally lost that record as well we have to concede that by whatever criteria you look at it the AFL is the No1 footy code here now.

The challenge is how will the NRL turn it around? As posted lots of positives for the game in Victoria and Q'land. Just need to reignite the interest in NSW again and have some concrete plans for the game in WA and SA. Some proactive media courting wouldn't go amiss in NSW for starters.

It's number one, but I don't think it is by as far as the media purports. In the markets where both games were shown live, we absolutely trounced the AFL.

Jesus, you're the most negative person here. Look around and breathe in that statement.

That is ONE game and to my knowledge the NRL Grand Final has NEVER outrated the AFL Grand final. To get within 40 or 50k when the AFL GF is live to all states and the NRL to 3 is absolutely phenomenal and a kick in the guts to a code that considers itself to be the "true national code".

It is also pertinent that out of the two codes, the #3, 4 and 5 matches are the 3 SOO matches. Same deal, AFL Live to all the country, SOO live to two or three states.

The only negative was the Sydney ratings.

Start again.

It trounced the AFL gf in 2001.

It's a pity NZ is yet showing signs of being consistently strong.

If it was a viable comp, RL would outrate RU in trans-tasman games, and we'd have 6,7 & 8 too.

The only negative was the Sydney ratings.

Start again.

Good point, 300k drop in Sydney has a lot of explaining to do. Sydney needs a shake up as far as promoting the game, a merger did wonders for the Pies/Tigers after a gf win.

We should merge every other sydney team and give them a gf on the platter.

That should do it.

Also EA, you've gone away fro mthis point, I remember you using it on the TFC, probably a Bea or JohnnyWilk argument, the ratings from the 1996 gf of 1.2 million in Sydney.

It sort of indicated that gf ratings in Sydney have gone down instead of up since moving to night time.

the anzac game outrated the bledisloe in NSW and QLD , obviously not the whole country as it wasnt shown everywhere, but still a good effort.

i dont think it needs a lot of explaining other than the fact it was the first true expansion team only grand final in either code. If one sydney team had of made it you would have had 300,000 more viewers. Sydney people will get used to the out of town games.

the reason nine like the night time game is that only figures between 6pm-12pm count towards the yearly figures.

also 96 was canterbury v manly , the same game would have easily got more than 1.2 million this year.

the reality is sydney figures are going to vary according to who is playing, the same thing happens in every other city, some teams have more fans than others. I cant believe some people cant see this.

imagine the sydney figures for a dragons v tigers game !

You are wrong!!

AFL grand final 2001 (7) 2.60 m

NRL grand final 2001 (9) got less than 2.22 m as it did not make the top 68 shows since 2001.

INclude the regionals? Or are there only 5 towns in Australia?

The 2001 GF trounced the AFL in Sydney and Melbourne. IN Sydney the figures were considerably higher than this years. BUt remember which teams were playing - arguably the 2 best supported teams in NSW. I also recall thousands at Marathon and Parra Stadium to watch it on the big screen.

So having 2 non Sydney teams DOES make a difference - same as not having the Broncos in a GF makes a difference there as well!

5 cities

Most media only go for this & regionals don't mean alot to Media buyers or TV execs

The TV guys look at the Oztam figures, little or no regard for regionals generally.

However for our purposes - as a measure of interest in a game/code - they're as useful as the capital city figures.
