Bad Day for Utd and Football

For those of you who haven't heard, Glazer has all but taken over Man Utd. He's up to something like 72% ownership, and once he passes 75% he can't be stopped.

And before all the anti-Utd fans start laughing, this will hurt all fans of English clubs. Glazer is taking out a massive loan to buy us, and the easiest way to pay that back is probably for him to negotiate our own tv rights (currently the english FA negotiate as the whole package, then spread that money amongst all the clubs). And if we take ourselves out of that, you can bet that Chelsea will do the same. Arsenal and Liverpool may also do it. And that means a whole lot less money for the other clubs in the premier league.

The second thing is the John Obi Mikel saga. He's an 18yo Nigerian playing for Lyn in Norway who has huge wraps on him. Everybody thought he was going to join Chelsea, but about two weeks ago he surprised everyone by signing for Man Utd. Chelsea turned around and threatened legal action, despite not having a leg to stand on (it's pretty much the Robben situation reversed). Since signing for us, he has been recieving death threats against himself and his family. Suddenly, he went missing with the last sighting being with an agent who, coincedentally, has been working closely with Chelsea and wouldn't get anything if the kid joins us. A few hours later, he turns up in London saying that he was pressured into signing for Utd (apparantely he looked very nervous and upset while saying this, completely different from the laughing and smiling he was doing at the press conference where the signing was made public). Now obviously nobody knows the full story here or what is going to happen, but the whole thing is an absolute disgrace and FIFA need to do a thorough investigation.

And just to top it off for the Utd fans, Fergie was charged by the FA for something he said after a game and Rio was charged by the cops for driving past a police car at 170 km/h.

Fantastic last 24 hours for Man Utd.

Boo f*cking hoo. Watch as 95% of your supporters put the Man U shirts in the closet and the Chelsea ones come out. 'Glazers gunna get ya, Glazers gunna get ya, na na na na na'

I will still support Man Utd, but I can't help feeling that it'll been cheapened once Glazer takes over. He doesn't care about the history, the tradition of the great club. He just wants to make money. I'm just praying he doesn't sell the naming rights for Old Trafford. I don't think I could handle watching us play in 'Big Mac Stadium'.

If FC United do get up and running, I will definitely be supportive of them also.

Do you see Man U give a toss that Wrexham or Cambridge Utd are about to go out of business?
What are we supposed to do about it? Give them a loan?

If Glazer does pull us out of the collective tv negotiations, expect a lot more clubs to be on the brink of bankruptcy. Without us (and the other big clubs if they also negotiate their own coverage), the FA will get nowhere near as much, which means that the rest of the clubs get much less. Conversely, if we do negotiate our own tv deal it could end in making us richer than we ever have been before (not as rich as Chelsea, but the gap between us and the rest will widen further).

That's my point. Purely from a results perspective this could well end up working nicely for Man Utd (depending on what Glazer does). But for football in general it's a kick in the teeth.

I wasn't talking about the club, I was talking about the fans. The many Surrey based supporters you have thought it was hilarious that Palace nearly went bust in 2000, I hope Glazer strips all your assets and pisses off.

Mate your a fool. Yes Glazer will sh*t up Manchester United in the short term and in the long term probably not much else will change but this will all have ZERO effect on all other English clubs. Negotiatie Man. Utd Tv rights? He can't he doesn't own them nor do Manchester United. The last time I checked Manchester United were apart of the English Premier League run by the FA whom along with Sky who paid some idiotic amount of money for the rights for the next ten years or so own the rights nothing to do with Manchester maybe they can use the rights for the Man Utd Tv channel in England but he can't just take them away from Sky and sell them to some rival.

Who cares about Obi Mikel he'll end up at Manchester Utd most likely anyway.

Rio deserves what he gets and so does Ferguson.

Key points from that little BBC article.

"BBC business editor Jeff Randall believes Malcolm Glazer's takeover bid for Manchester United could have implications for all football clubs."

-it's a BBC business editors opinion

"If United can break with the Premier League collective agreement and negotiate on their own then maybe they can jack up their income."

-problem is they most likely won't be able to break with the Premier League collective agreement any time soon unless Malcolm Glazer decides he doesn't want to play in the Premier League anymore

Too true, watch the Chelsea bandwagon roll on.

Madd_dogg - I don't think that Glazer will go that far to raise cash, more likely he'll push up ticket, food, merchandise prices. Also selling Old Trafford is an option.

I feel sorry for you mate because your club is in trouble but Man Utd and their fans are hardly going to get much sympathy from the rest of the football world.

Here's a letter Glazer has sent to the fans

Dear Soccer fans,

As you all know, I've been looking to buy the United's of Manchester for a little while now. I've also heard that some of you may not be too happy about me using, sorry, buying the club in order to reach new heights and also, that I may not be a fan. Well fear not, as i'm writing this personal letter to let you know that i'm a genuine fan of you blue devils. I began rooting for the United's back in 1992 when our little Malcolm JR was practising those Soccer home runs out in the yard. I loved the way you turned defence into offence, and the way that Bobby Shearer used to top half it into the goal bag. Oh man, that play was hot. My son tells me that you even out-zoned your City rivals Southampton in the 4th quarter of the FA World series. As for your current team, that Rude guy is awesome!!!! I see a profitable future at the United, with the young talent of Cristiano Rooney (man, that guy can dance!) and Peter Shilton giving us hope in defeating the evil Russian tyranny which assaults the freedom of our beloved Soccer. With the marketing potential of those Neville brothers and that Pearce dude leading the team, we can all look to acheiving our beliefs of a better future. Especially when I add Alexei Lalas and Cobi Jones to the starting 15. Now to you, the fans. I've been to see the United's play once before, and the respect you pay your team in silently admiring the play out on the pitch was overwhelming. Because of this, i've just purchased a new £45 million mansion in the Manchester to be close to you guys. And more good news is i'm planning to add an extra 10,000 seats through corporate boxes so more genuine blue devils can experience the play. What's with the prawn sandwiches I had to eat when I was there? Well, rest assured, it'll be super size prawn baguettes when I take charge. I can't wait to come over to the Manchester isles, as I love the country, especially the beaches and the hot chicks. I hope you can all see my vision of this future, with new shirt sponsors (Dunkin Donuts) and new team name (The Manchester Gloom) i'm sure things are looking bright. *Further good news for you guys is that i've just agreed a partnership deal with McDonalds, who will help in promoting the Manchester brand. This will involve re-naming the stadium to 'McTrafford' as well as an exciting launch of Manchester Gloom plastic fan toys in every happy meal. Cristiano Rooney will be the face of this campaign and during this, he will be marketed globally as Roonald McDonald. TOUCHDOWN! Take care dudes.

Regards,

Malcolm Glazier

Fans of PLC clubs have no right to complain when they are sold off to the highest bidder. Man U sold their soul when they became a PLC, and attempted to spread their 'brand' across the world. This was when it ceased to be a football club, but a business.
