Balmain Tigers Leagues Club

How do you propose a leagues club makes 8 million in 2 years when the site for said building will not be built within the next 2 years at rozelle village?

Its then gotta make several million per year just to keep up its end of the bargain in the merger, as well as extra money to cover its own costs etc.

all while paying high rent & receiving no income from the development at all?
can you tell everyone what is the tigers plan please . cause alot dont know
even some of the media , ok

No court would have put a hold on the receivership demands if their situation was impossible.

Looking from the outside, yes their situation looks bleak, but Iam sure as with most things a lot of stuff has been held back from the media and the real situation might be not nearly as bad as we are led to believe.

My main concern is a iconic club could be lost for ever, the Weststigers will get funding from another source and will continue to operate but I would hate to see the tigers or should I say Balmain disappear off the radar

I personally don't think this situation is anything more than a Storm in a teacup. If Balmain leagues folds, Balmain potentially lose 2 members off the Wests Tigers board. They can still field Balmain junior teams if they have the funds to do so, Wests Ashfield has confirmed their commitment to the Joint Venture, ie the Wests Tigers are not going to change back to the Magpies or anything like that, games will still be played at Leichhardt, essentially the Club will continue business as usual but without the bickering.

If Balmain can get their finances in order in the future, they will resume their spot on in the Management structure of the Wests Tigers because Wests Ashfield are not going to throw away the opportunity of having only to pay half once again.

Just my opinion.

DanOz - that is exactly my understanding of the issue at the moment.
All the doom and gloom, propaganda and bs being thrown around by fans and especially the media annoys me. Idiot Channel 9 commentators claiming Wests Tigers are in trouble and it may affect players wanting to be there. Morons. Balmain are in trouble financially but it has ZERO effect on Wests Tigers who are doing well thanks to Wests Ashfield and Wests Campbelltown being financially strong.

Balmain should walk away from the doomed venture and anything Back Door Benny touches and start a new financial long term vision for the future. The Wests Tigers will be waiting for them.

It pisses me off as well. It is a problem for Balmain Tigers but they will more than likely get themselves together in a couple of years and everything should be fine. Wests Tigers should remain strong.

The Star Casino, with it's premises located in Balmain territory, ideally mind you, could have been sponsoring the Wests Tigers instead of South Sydney.

Imagine the damage to patronage of clubs and pubs in the Balmain district when that monolith opened and sucking the life out of everything nearby?

The Balmain Leagues Club proposal has been rejected again this time by the Planning Assessment Commission, which found 'the impacts of the development outweigh any benefits offered by the proposal and there has been no workable solution provided by the proponent to overcome the traffic and transport issues'.
The committee also noted the community support for the reinstatement of the
Balmain Leagues club, the existing planning controls allow 'redevelopment for a mix of uses, including residential and a new club'.
The Leichhardt Mayor, welcomed the decision that the councils decision in rejecting the 24 storey proposal has been proven to be correct .The Mayor also mentioned
'Leichhardt council has always wanted the Balmain leagues club to stay in Balmain (but)we have never supported sky scrappers on the site, and never will.'
The saga continues....!

The developers have always known that their proposal was never going to receive development consent for this very reason yet they've stubbornly pushed away, unwilling to compromise in any material way. Their strategy was cynical - to exploit public concern about the Tigers' financial situation and to foster the perception that the survival of the club hinged on the approval of the development (even though the club was only ever going to be a tenant). You can blame the pinko, lefist, Bolshevik, basket-weaving, ABC-watching, anti-development, warmist, atheist residents all you want, but the proposal failed to comply with basic planning principles and was accordingly rejected.

Whatever misgivings the local residents and the council have about the development is not in issue; the government took control of the site under its part 3A planning laws. Fatty O’Barrell’s ‘independent’ planning commission’ could have rubber stamped the proposal as it’s inclined to do for other developments, but this application was so at odds with the relevant planning code as not to be salvageable.

Let’s hope that the developers can come up with a more modest proposal which mitigates the impact on traffic etc. but still yields a significant enough profit for them to go ahead with the development. While it might not be to the tastes of the local residents, as long as it meeds the planning criteria, the planning commission will approve it.

Assuming that another application is lodged, unfortunately, the developers will not be able to count on the support of the likes of Eddie Obeid and Nick Di Girolamo this time around.

Problem is it could have been a moderate proposal and the objections from NIMBY's would be the same

Objections from NIMBYs don't seem to stop the moderate development that's happening all over the rest of Sydney...

How did Balmain Leagues become $28 million in debt in the first place? Surely if they'd had good financial management they could have retained ownership of the site and had a development like the Bulldogs have just had approved. Having sold the site, they will only be tenants somewhere from now on. How can they possibly afford to rent a big enough site to hold a successful Leagues club, e.g. Ashfield Magpies?
People can try blaming the council and residents, but it seems most of the fault lies with the club and the developer. Incompetence and greed.
