I could be wrong but I think they've only recorded with 3 - They got Frusciante after Slovak died, Navarro did the album after he left and then Frusciante came back for the later albums.

I know they went through a lot of guitarists in between Frusciante leaving and returning but other than navarro none of them lasted long enough to record anything.

Correctamundo.

Read "Scar tissue" it is an absolute ball tearer.

I don't buy that, its not entirely accurate. One listen to their last album raises doubts.

One of the (many) strengths of By The way was its diversity. Dosed had a Brian Wilson hue with a rich deep sound and sunny Beach boy harmonies. Zephyr Song was a psychedelic poppy surf tune. Throw Away Your Television with its Bonham-esque power drums. Cabron had a mariachi-like guitar motif. Tear could be the first Peppers piano track. Venice Queen, an epic rock ballad that breaks down into a thrilling acoustic heart-thumper. I'm just touching the surface here but I'm hoping my point is made.

Fair enough if you don't like them, but suggesting they belong in this thread is not valid. The voice may be familiar, but each album has been different to the last, and the variety within has been quite ranging. Looking forward to the new one, despite Dani California failing to blow my skirt up.

Which style of death metal are you referring to in-particular?

I assume brutal death in which case you may have a point
None i nparticular, and im probly being ignorant here. Im just not much a fan of the stuff you know, a tad of in flames and children of bodom is enough for me (along with the Metallica, Pantera and Slayer stuff).

If I can't pick a song by my favourite band then somethins is not quite right... so no i don't agree ;)

I hate to break the bad news to you about your favourite band ( since you were 16 ).

but....

All their songs sound the same....sorry.

It's the double bass and Chris' Guitar setup.
He is a jazz trained guitarist and uses it in his songs.

It hasn't changed for years.

This isn't a bad thing, like I said I like the band.

a bit of death metal is okay, but only in small doses i reckon. if you hear a cradle of filth, cannibal corspe or napalm death album from end to end (believe me, i have tried), it sounds like one loooooong song where you dont understand the words and have a headache by the end.

Not if you're really into it it doesn't. I can understand people thinking that if they're not a fan of the genre though, even when you are a fan, a death metal album tends to take a fair few listens before the individual songs start to reveal themselves out of the avalanche of noise. Even as a death metal fan I'll admit that bands I don't like tend to sound pretty samey to me. However when you take the time to get into an album you'll often find there's a lot of variation there that's not immediately apparent. But I guess it's not for everyone (thats one thing I like about it)

Lol the new Cryptopsy album took me 6 or 7 listens before I even really got into it and I'm a fan of them. Sometimes I prefer catchy stuff that I can get into instantly too.

In Flames were once considered melodic death metal but they've gone a bit crap recently. But maybe try Amon Amarth or Dark Tranqulity. And of course Opeth. Not too heavy for the uninitiated but heavy enough to give a bit of a kick up the arse!!

I know we're talking "rock" bands here, but 99% of commercial hip hop is the same. Same formula: Candy-ass beats, candy-ass rhymes, half naked girls and flash cars in the videos...

Yep, there are a sh*tload of subgenres of death metal, most with quite different sounds, although they'd probably sound pretty similar to the uninitiated. But then again most R&B, commercial pop or punk sounds the same to me as I'm not into it.

Surely even the uninitiated would notice the difference between Cryptopsy and In Flames don't you think Monkey?

You can't call In Flames death metal. Melodic metal. Pop metal. Stuff like that maybe.

The last four albums I agree - complete turd - but up to Whoracle they were deemed melodic death

That's the most intelligent post I've ever read on here.
