Banners of protest

forget the petitions, forget the banners, if we want to make a protest that will be peaceful but get across our message we need to unfortunately hit the club where it hurts the most and that is through the leagues club pokies.

My idea is as follows(and this may sound crazy):
Have a group of 30-50 turn up to the club early one day and begin playing the pokies on the lowest amount possible 1 line at a time.

If this group played 1 game per minute and spent 1c per game(1 line at 1c) we could conceivably block the pokies for a few hours and in doing so restrict the income the club makes. At worst each person may have to spend $10 to do this but the impact on the club would be much greater than the outlay.

No doubt we would have to return and keep doing this overtime providing they didn't ban us to get the message across

Thoughts?
You're right.

It does sound crazy. And quite impractical.

But... not without precedent.

I do like the story of Vespasian. He starved Rome to rid his countrymen of the rabble in charge. He actually saved Rome. If not for Vespasian, there would be no Colosseum.

But are we really comparing the Taj to Rome?

Perhaps beating them through democratic means is still the best option - or the only real option - available.

I know the incumbents have got it sewn up, the shennighans are well known. BUT, when a challenge is mounted (even a failed challenge), it sends a shiver through the board. And believe me, they know the fans have the potential to roll every single one of them.

Willow, the only info I can find on previous ballots showed less than 4000 club members voted.
3 directors appointed with votes of less than 900 each.
If you have been a Leagues Club member for 3 years, you can be nominated.
Surely we have a cleanskin or two, maybe even a celebrity type, a decent profile that could be put up for nomination? Elections held in March? Follow the rules to the letter of the law, keep it clean and get some change happening. Needs to be a transparent campaign and enquiries should be made with Registered Clubs for their 'advice', knowing full well the board would be notified.
It is really the only way to break the monopoly or current stranglehold.

Next March, that's correct. You need to be a full voting Leagues Club member. Voting can only be done on the premises.

Any chance there can be a sticky called St George Reform, which can contain useful information resource on how people can participate in democracy?

Things are shit, true.
Putting the club into further financial distress smacks of a looming disaster to me given that we are already struggling.
If we want risk contributing to the death of the club in trying to change the administration include me out.

thats a bit sad. What you have said is neither correct or logical. One new board member to try and stem the flow thats seen the loss of 25,000 members and $40 million in reserves. The best that can be hoped for is some transparency. Don't you want transparency and not secrecy?

To capitulate before the battle has even started sounds a little over dramatic. At least suspend judgement.

Wtf?
It sounds like you have no idea what i was referring to.
My comment has nothing to do with replacing a board member.

This should be billed the put up or shut up election. Before every election supporters talk/type a great fight and then not show up for the real thing . In the next election people will be running. There will be an opposition who is willing to take responsibility for our club and how they do is really up to each and every one of you..

I have done a few elections ( lol ) against this lot and they way they have evolved to shut down any challengers would amaze you.. I remember in nearly every election the infamous doorman ( old timers know to whom I refer ) would niggle us all day every day . They brought him back from holidays one year. In most elections we believed ( with reason )we were winning the election right up to the last day and then with an hour or so to go bus loads of blue haired pensioners would show up and led inside by the Doorman who would without shame fawn over them before taking them to the polling station.

These days I am told we can no longer have anyone on the property handing out how to votes so even though you can vote for the opposition there is no one allowed to tell you who the opposition are and what they stand for.. However there are plenty of people no doubt happy to help you identify the current board members .

Some elections people come out the woodwork and dilute the vote .
In one election we had people who were multilingual in tongues like Mandarin, Lebanese and Serbian . the club must have thought that was clever because on day two they produced multilingual people of there own.

We fought them over important issues like getting lights for and playing at Kogarah Oval and the need to repair the auditorium. The auditorium is crucial as it is the place for live entertainment , Music , shows , comedy nights you name it . The current board have left that to rot for over a decade . They have however built a smokers room and kept a healthy amount of pokies in a era that is against these things being of any real profitability.

Have heard those stories ! It's shameful

Isn't their a higher power ie clubs nsw that would frown on this
from the boys club board and punish accordingly ?

Flashback...

ST GEORGE RL COMMITTEE QUITS EN BLOC

Author: By PAUL TAIT
Date: 02/07/1987

Publication: Sydney Morning Herald
Section: Sport (page: 34)

The seven-man committee of the St George District Rugby League Football Club resigned last night.

The committee, headed by president Jim Grant, resigned after meeting Saints Leagues Club general manager Danny Robinson and chairman Alec Mackie. The meeting was also attended by NSW Rugby League general manager John Quayle.

The meeting was held to discuss the financial assistance of the Leagues Club to the Rugby League club. It is believed the Rugby League club requested a grant of approximately $1 million from the Leagues Club for next year, double the size of the current grant.

The St George Leagues Club will now take over the running of the Rugby League club and will appoint a sub-committee to administer its affairs.

Club secretary John Fleming, a paid official of the Leagues Club, retains his position.

Robinson said the committee agreed to resign "in the interests of the betterment and continuation of the St George club".

"The board of directors of the Leagues Club have been requested to inject funds into the football club to enable it to meet the commitments for 1987 and in particular to become a more competitive force for the 1988 season," Robinson said.

"The Leagues Club have agreed to do this and also to support the proposal of the Kogarah Council and the State Government for the development of a grandstand at (Kogarah) Jubilee Oval.

"The amount of funds required is significant and with such a commitment for funds it is considered reasonable that administration and expenditure should be controlled by the Leagues Club."

Robinson said that the move was a necessary one if the St George club was once again to become a competitive force in the Sydney premiership.
The club has suffered from an exodus of top players since 1985, including Michael O'Connor, Steve Morris, Chris Walsh, Perry Haddock and Pat Jarvis.

Only this week second-rower Billy Noke and utility back Chris Johns signed contracts with the new Brisbane club.

The Rugby League club felt it needed more money from the Leagues Club if it were to retain its current playing staff and sign more quality players.
That desire to strengthen its playing staff led to the demise of the Rugby League club committee.

The club also met the NSW Minister for Sport, Mr Cleary, last week to discuss the financing of the new grandstand at Kogarah Oval.

That meeting resolved that the State Government would make $1 million available in the form of a grant and a low-interest loan.

Kogarah Council also agreed to make $300,000 available, while the Leagues Club is still to determine the size of its contribution to the project.

Coupled with the money it will make available for the purchase of players, the Leagues Club may now be looking at a financial commitment of more than $2 million to rebuild its football team and home ground.

I work directly with a CEO of a sporting body that reports directly to a board of elected directors. The CEO has has great ideas , puts things in place and makes proactive steps to promote the sport and junior development only to be shot down in flames by on almost every agenda by an ageing board of directors with blinkers on. I sit in on most of the board meetings and eyewitness the pathetic goings on.

However, this is a "banner" thread and in no way am I defending Doust as he is on the board, but the guys with the GST banner that I have seen at so many games and for so long need to put it away and not display it for a whole because for the last 2.5 to 3 years we are far from a Great St.george Team.
How about creating a new one such as:

Gotta sack/resign

Dragon Blood, you really can't tell people to put away their banners or change their message. That would make you no better than those who confiscate banners they don't like.

If you would like to see a different banner, then make it yourself and get out there. With respect, get involved and don't expect others to do it. Just saying...

And great flashback R2K. A few similarities there to today and an interesting insight into the development of the club board. We certainly know which side has the money.

I don't take much notice or read your posts to be brutally honest, but now you have me wondering if you pick the crap out of other members contributions on this forum as much as you do mine.

Let me know what you're ingesting or inserting into yourself so i can stay right away from it.
You sound like a F@$%*!#G kindy teacher.:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:
