I'm aware of that...one of the plebs at BigFooty informed me.
So the AFL has done it? Big deal, rugby league does it better....just like Origin ;-)
Yes, I'm aware also the McAuliffe pinched the idea from whoever was running the VFL then. Still, all those years later Jason Dunstall, who is from Cooparoo, was still getting around in a Big V jersey.
Aust rules (WAFL I think, not the VFL) invented the phrase "State of Origin" - they didn't invent the concept already long used in various sports of non-residential state/national qualification being adopted and used to call up non-residents. The Aust rules S of O was not a one-on-one game, and though it was played in 1977, it was sporadic (not every year) until well after RL began the 3-game series in 1982.
Nor did they invent the idea of an All-Indigenous sports team, a concept that stretches back from the 1868 Aboriginal cricket team, 1888 NZ Natives (Maori), to the Carlisle Indians, the Maori RL teams of 1908-09, the Maori RU teams, and the many
Aboriginal RL teams first formed in the 1920s.
Looking around google seems that the Aust rules bi-annual Indigenous game has only been shown on ABC2 or ABC (late night replay).
