Great thread SGL. I know we've taken over a few threads in the past discussing our love of beer so it's nice to see one dedicated to the golden nectar.
The love for James Squire beers is understandable. At the Malt Shovel Brewery you have Australia's finest brewer - Chuck Hahn being given free rein to craft the beers he likes. Lion Nathan allow him the budget and the distribution chains to provide beer connoisseurs throughout the country to enjoy a range of different products. They are quite easily the best range of beers on the market. The only shame is they are not available on tap in more pubs.
Always remember with the Squires range, they are much better served at a higher temperature than your standard Lager, Amber and Golden Ales especially. This will allow the flavours to come through much better. Just let the bottles sit for ten minutes before pouring.
At present, I'm partial to James Boag's Draught as my friday arvo thirst quenching Lager. My taste for this beer came on my trip to Tassie couple of years ago. The way I see it, JB and Cascade Draught are vying for the top standard-level Lager in the country. They're so far ahead of New, Carlton Draught et al it's not funny. Cascade Draught was a particular treat, as it is not available on the mainland.
I'd go as far as saying that both Tassie Lagers are superior than their Premium counterparts, especially when considering value for money.
A nice craft beer I'm enjoying is the Holgate Brewery range, which is brewed at a microbrewery at Keating's Hotel in Woodend in the Macedon Ranges. The Chocolote Porter is a guilty pleasure.
Strangely enough, the only CUB beer I enjoy is Melbourne Bitter. Going into many pubs and clubs in Victoria can be an unsatisfying experience, given the range of beers many offer (imagine being met with VB, Carlton Draught, Pure Blonde and Cascade Light on tap, that's all). But Melbourne Bitter is a welcome relief. CUB is not a good brewery in my experience, and Lion Nathan leaves them for dead in the range of beers they support.
A foreign beer worth pursuing is Quilmes, from Argentina. I remember fondly drinking 500ml bottles in the backwaters of Buenos Aires many years ago and cracking one always brings me fond memories. Best served ice cold that one.
Will get out and try some more soon. Cheers fellas.
