Ben Barba and Colombian Marching Powder

If the Sharks had every intention of bringing him straight back into the team only weeks after sacking him, then what was the point of sacking him?
There was no shopping him around to other clubs, it was just immediately back to the Sharks... why?
Smelt fishy to me. Almost as if the Sharks saw an opportunity to re-do his contract to suit them. Guess that backfired.
How can the Sharks be disappointed to lose him when they sacked him ..

It was his request apparently, either way why would the sharks keep him on the same contract when he has a 12 match ban and has given them some negative publicity right after the clubs biggest moment? Though I cant see any reason Ben would want to get a release also, its a bit strange.

If you read back over the news stories when it broke about his drug test result, under the NRL's Policy, the penalties the Sharks could impose on the player -

  1. " a fine that is ten per cent (10%) of the net value of the Player's playing contract for that year, to be deducted from the contract payments owed to the Player by the Club; or
  2. termination of the Player's playing contract."
(source - click here).

According to the Sharks (and I have no reason to doubt their veracity), it was Barba and his management who requested the contract termination (source - click here).

I think
He was told by the sharks a second bust is a sacking .
They win the comp
He gets busted again
But now he is GF hero to many sharks fans
So..
They maybe mutually decide he should ask to be released- go do some bullshit rehab.
Come back
Get paid less - and he can play for sharks again.

Maybe the NRL didn't like this and refused to let him train.

That makes absolutely no sense.
Why would Barba (or any player), get caught doing the wrong thing and then ask for a release from his large contract...
He went back to the Sharks only weeks later intending to sign a smaller deal. Even if he went to another club, he was only getting a 'redemption' contract so was duding himself, for what, a 2 week trip to rehab in the off-season when he was not required for training...

No wonder the NRL was making them sweat. The whole thing seemed like an opportunity to re-work their cap.

Funnily the NRL is now run by somone who knows these tricks because he's tried them himself.. Good.

EDIT: posted before I saw the above

I dont know why he wasn't allowed to train but I think the sharks and Ben and his management and have got together and worded it in a way that portrays Barba and the club in the best light. The contract was always going to be torn up, but Barba standing up and asking for a release to get his stuff together looks better than the sharks sacking him. The club isn't seen to be abandoning a player with issues or taking advantage of the situation as it was his request and Barba is seen as accepting responsibilities for his mistake and immediately fixing the issue.

The (1) and (2) in my previous quote, which were taken from an article in the Sydney Morning Herald were quoted word for word from the NRL's Drug Testing Policy and it applied directly to Barba as it was his second offence. The decision whether to fine him or terminate his contract was very much up to the Sharks as to which they would do.

Further the other article I posted the link to, from the ABC, contained this direct quote from Lyall Gorman -

Sharks chief executive Lyall Gorman said Barba was tested four days after the Sharks' grand final victory and returned a positive test for cocaine.

"Last Friday we were approached by the player and his management, advising us that Ben wished to seek a release from his contract to step outside the game," Mr Gorman said.

I said this earlier in the thread, the Orrs want to get the most money for their clients and hence themselves. Seeing as both Barba and Holmes are managed by them I have no doubt they've basically said take your pick of one because we can get one million a year for each of them. Sharks chose Holmes for longevity and hopefully without the headlines.
IMO Barba is a way better fullback right now and was a major factor in the Premiership win. Holmes may be that in the future but he isnt at the moment.

Barba is lethal in the op 20
But he's lost some of that freakish pace he had at the dogs .
Wereas Young Valent time is lethal getting out of our 20 and can go all the way
IMO
Only a matter of time before he starts carving it up from anywhere

You're probably right mate, hence why i said at the moment.
We were going to have to get a fullback anyway and he's just about the best that was going to be on the market. I don't see back to back but i do see serious challenges the years after.
