No matter how useless a half is (Hunt isn't useless) a halfback will always have more opportunity to influence a game and the players around them than a prop.

I don't think Petero's inability to drag the Panthers over the line is any real indication of anything in this case.

A bit like the Panthers signing Petro a few years back. A player of undoubted quality, but surrounded by nuffies he took Penrith to one finals series in 4 years despite playing quite strongly. It is doubtful that Hunt is of the same quality.

If you could bottle it you'd be a billionaire.

Luke Lewis, Trent Waterhouse, Frank Pritchard, Michael Jennings, Lachlan Coote, Wade Graham, Sam Mckendry, Tim Grant, Michael Gordon, Gavin Cooper. Petero was surrounded by current and future international and origin players plus good solid toilers like Nigel Plum, Kevvy Kingston, Franky 8ball, Dave Simmons, Brad Tighe and Nathan Smith. We just had invested all our money into the wrong positions and had a terrible culture. Petero was part of the problem in the end, when he left us he wrote an open letter to the western weekender telling all Penrith fans that Gus is ruining the team and will not be successful all because the players were no longer allowed to pick the teams etc and now look at us compared to then. We would of been much better off paying all that money to a very good half.

Wow. Ben Hunt has been dropped for the clash against Souths. What has gone quietly unnoticed is that the Broncos went on a successful winning streak without Hunt. Milford has also looked better also without Hunt in the line up when he has been partnered in the halves with Kodi Nikorima. I know Milford didn't play last week against the Roosters but the point still stands.

"Halfback Ben Hunt has been dropped from Brisbane's NRL clash with South Sydney on Friday night.

The star No.7 has been relegated to the second tier Queensland Cup in Ipswich this weekend after coach Wayne Bennett opted to start Kodi Nikorima at halfback.

Veteran Benji Marshall will be the Broncos' bench utility against the Rabbitohs at Suncorp Stadium.

Hunt will take up a lucrative St George Illawarra deal next year and appears to face an uphill battle to break back into the Broncos side again this season as Bennett plans for the future.

Bennett said Hunt had been dropped on form but admitted it was a "hard conversation" to have with his No.1 halfback.

"It was not an easy decision but it has been made," he said.

"It's on form. Benji and Kodi have been playing really well and (five-eighth) Anthony Milford has picked his game up.

"It came down to options and who was playing well. Ben's form hasn't been what I wanted."

Bennett said Hunt - just two weeks back from a hamstring injury - knew exactly what was required of him to break back into the side.

"We need him to run the ball more. That's part of the job description and he is one of the best ball runners in the game," he said.

Nikorima will combine with Queensland five-eighth Anthony Milford in the halves against the Rabbitohs.

He missed last week's 18-16 loss to Sydney Roosters due to a shoulder complaint.

Bennett said he was keen to keep former Kiwi captain Marshall who has impressed since signing a modest one-season Broncos deal this year.

"He wanted an opportunity and we gave him that," he aid.

"He is coming back to the Benji form of old.

"He is enjoying his footy again. He has been outstanding at the club.

"We are keen to keep him here. He's a valued player."

I can't see him working his way back into the side from here, which would be a sad way for it to end at the Broncos.

I remember in 2015 the sky looked like the limit for Hunt. There was always a lingering doubt over his ability to stand up in big games, but after he destroyed the Roosters in the game prior to the grand final, I thought there was nothing to it. Then the Grand Final happened, and his game never seemed to recover after that. His head goes missing when it's needed most.

Good luck to him at the Dragons. His strength is a direct running game - with any luck off a dominant Dragon's pack, he'll rediscover this. Widdop should compliment him well, especially as he'll take over the bulk of the kicking duties.

Wayne can't even admit that he dropped him cause he signed with the Dragons. What a tosser. We all know it, why not just admit it

That's very harsh on Hunt, he's only a couple of games since returning from injury.

Must be handy to have a couple of kiwi internationals in reserve grade to call up.
