What does that definition have to do with pseudo deep and meaningful lyrics? Being pretentious is about claiming superiority, and being "showy" as your definition shows. It hence barely makes sense as a critique of music or any art. It is more useful as a critique of image. Which of course has nothing to do with the actual art.

I tell you what I don't like about Ben Lee, is the Ben Lee bandwagon.

I have his last two albums and don't mind them. I have a bunch of stuff i downloaded as well and he has some interesting little numbers.

The bandwagon is what kills him. Everyone goes around proclaiming him to be the most fantastic thing since sliced bread when he isnt. He is just a simple songwriter/musician who likes singing love songs.

If he was only given credit for what he does, not want people want him to stand for (a shinning light in australian music) he wouldn't come across that bad.

Next time your in a pub and "That's the way i like it" streams from a P.A don't jeer, have a beer and cheer then sing-a-long.

Too much brainpower put into simple music and simple musicians kills it.

That's because there is no connection. If you want to see showy, see any sort of pop music. If you want showy, see 50 Cent. I don't see what it has to do with attempts, however poor, to tackle meaningful subjects.

btw I agree about the Ben Lee bandwagon post. Ben Lee is nobody in NZ, hence I have no preconceived reason to despise him, hence it is actually much easier for me to like him as a response to the over the top criticism on this forum.

I know this is going back a while in this thread but I couldn't let it pass.
I read recently that Whats the Story, Morning Glory by Oasis has sold more copies in the UK than any album by the Beatles. I know which artist is better and they have sold less albums. Albums sold etc don't really have any bearing on how great an artist is otherwise your making some very good claims to greatness for some of the trash we see on the pop circuit these days like Britney Spears.

I still can't understand why that one wasn't as big a hit as catch my disease. Its still just about as catchy and radio friendly but its a much better song.

Having said that I don't hate catch my disease either, its probably 'cause I rarely listen to the radio nowadays so I'm not getting the overkill that everyone else is.
