Dragons pre Bennett were pretty ordinary.
Bennett arrives and from the very first game (a loss v Storm) I knew something was different about this team. The Bennett effect was instant. We went on to win 17 of our next 20 games.

His impact at Newcastle hasn't been great. I hope for you guys' sake things improve. Just stop buying Dragons players please.

Just on the whole "no-one is demanding to be picked" issue, the NSW Cup side trailed 26-0 and lost 37-36 in the 80th minute. So one of two things happened there, either the 'Dogs put the cue in the rack, or someone sparked the comeback.

However it happened, Bennett said basically what I posted.

I would definately point to club culture being a massive issue.

Lock them in the stadium, supply them free booze and let the unity and mateship return/form.

yep, our losing culture is dead set toxic. the players should be dead set ashamed of themselves. they had 30+ thousand people turning up to watch them play at the start of the year. they'll be lucky to get 10 by the end if they keep dishing up the current nonsense. they are better than what they are dishing up, both as individuals and as teammates.

I'm starting to get the feeling that he's lost the support of at least a portion of the playing group. If i had to speculate, I reckon there is discontent in the playing group. We've rarely seemed like a bunch of blokes that wants to play together.

If that is the case and I know that its speculation, then I wouldn't want to be a player having the club choose between me and Wayne Bennett. Thats a bet that Wally Lewis lost so how do these numpities think its going to turn out.

Anyone who isn't behind Bennett 100% should not be here. It's that simple, and no-one is immune to that. I get the feeling he's really struggling to rally the troops under 1 banner, though.

yeah, pure and simply he has said he'd prefer to pick a bloke out of form than to grant a chance to someone who isn't calling for it in the lower grades. doesn't get any clearer than that, for me. i also think it's a strong policy, and long term pays big dividends. all the blokes in NSW cup need to do to get a run at the moment is put their hand up. it's up to them.

gifting blokes first grade jerseys is a part of the reason we're in the situation we're in. there needs to be respect for that first grade jersey. there is very little at the moment amongst the senior players, but i get the feeling that many of those guys will be moving on before long. it starts at the bottom. make the current crop earn their jerseys and start from there. rebirth the culture from the ground up again - it's too late for a lot of the seniors already.

im starting to see a picture when i take a step back and look at what's going on. he's rebuilding a culture. gifting first grade jerseys to undeserving blokes flies in the face of it. i'm willing to back him 110% on selections. he's not stupid. he knows what he's doing. how many Broncos or Dragons get gifted jerseys because their counterpart is playing a bit ordinary? you dead set need to explode onto the scene to earn a jersey at those clubs now, and even then you take a long, long time to earn a spot in the starting 13. this is the beginning of that culture, and it's not only because the blokes above them are better at those clubs. i see blokes like Matt Prior and Dale Copley running out in front of more fancied lower graders frequently. a bloke like Jack De Belin is being made to earn every single minute he plays down at the Dragons at the moment. it's a winning attitude, a winning culture. it's all about respect in what you're doing and in the jersey.

The NSWCup team was dominating in the opening half of the season and has suddenly nosedived. There seems to be massive confidence issues amongst the playing group and it needs to be addressed. Wayne will not select guys from the lower grades unless they start putting in. Sulking that they are not getting opportunities then playing like shit is as counter productive as it gets.

Sounds like the whole playing group needs a kick up the arse

I'm with you Yosh. We'll be farked if Wayne gets the boot early. We can kiss goodbye any chance of luring quality players here if he faces the chop this early. Money isn't everything, look at our signings to date. I bet if you asked Beau Scott and Dane Gagai why they signed with Newcastle they would have said "to play under Wayne". Willie Mason, a former rep forward, signed up for peanuts. He wouldn't have done that under Stone (who I honestly believe is a very underrated coach and definitely deserves a head coach spot down the road). But in this game, reputation counts for a lot.

Of course I don't believe Tinks is even contemplating the possibility of sacking Bennett. What owner would give the green light to sign Dane Gagai two days after our most insipid performance of the year? An owner that is right behind the coach's decisions is what.

I'm willing to cop the short term pain and a walloping next weekend against the Broncos if it means I get to see my team consistently make finals series down the road. In Wayne we trust.

We need to cut the guys who dont like stern hard nosed coaching and keep the guys who want to be here. Wayne needs to set the playing group an ultimatum. If you don't like the way I coach or where I am going with the club you are a free agent to look elsewhere.

I have been in a team environment for 8 years and done leadership courses and I can tell you that bad attitude is cancer, all it takes is 1 or 2 people and it spreads, moral within the entire group drops, infighting begins and it spirals downwards. Looks like it has also spread through the juniors. It is not only up to Wayne to stop the rot, Jarrod Mullen, Chris Housten, Danny Buderus and Kurt Gidley (although injured) in conjunction with Chief and Matty Gidley need to get the whole group together, nut out the issues and start again with a clean slate from Round 13. It's up to the senior officials and players to sort it out as a team.
