I'll preface this post with the comment that I generally like David Morrow as a commentator. He has real passion for the game.
The 1990 Kangaroo Tour produced one of the best Test series ever played.
All three tests were refereed by Alain Sablayrolles, the Frenchman. French referees generally have a fairly poor reputation - some of it deserved, some not.
The fact is Sablayrolles put in a superb performance across the three Tests for a man who did not speak English and had to communicate with two English speaking captains in Meninga and Hanley.
The odd decision was incorrect, but he took excellent control of the teams and the result was glorious football...
Sablayrolles was castigated by both Morrow and Graeme Hughes in the commentary box. Both were clearly feeling the pinch in the 1st and 2nd Tests when their team (Australia) looked like going down in the series.
This manifested itself in Morrow particularly accusing Sablayrolles of not having a clue about the game.
I mention the example as one which shows that even a pretty good football judge can lose the plot when it comes to referees in the right context.
I am also not saying Sablayrolles was the best ref ever. But he had a superb series in trying circumstances (including a right blast from Fulton after the First Test - who then showed the referee was the last issue at fault by making wholesale changes before the second Test).
