It's not a "national" vote. It's a non-binding "survey'/poll run by a private organisation.

It doesn't change the constitution, and the results of the survey can just be ignored.

As vlad said, PNG sounds a lot like TNT so they chant PNG instead of TNT. You could also argue that TNT ties in with the mining industry which is prevalent in PNG.

A team's name, at the end of the day, is only as good as the team's reputation / marketing. 'A rose by any other name' kinda thing.

We can lament the fact some names are off-limits due to other teams/sports already having them, or the PNG team can choose another name, own it, and make it a household name. Make it a powerful brand. I'd suggest the NZ Warriors have done this better than most. Whether a kiwi in Australia watches or properly supports the Warriors or not, at least here in WA, there are almost as many Warriors emblem car stickers on cars as there are silver fern emblem car stickers.
... and the Warriors have never won a comp or had sustained success several years in a row.
