Big four offer to take pay cuts to stick together

The entire existence of Melbourne in the NRL was in News interests and not on rugby league fans'.

They served two purposes - to avoid the broncos having to compete with a second Brisbane team, by funnelling the overflow of talent into another state based team, and by tryin to expand the pay tv market.

It was so artificial the entire franchise has had to be propped up with a series of indulgences, from being propped up financially, to a blind eye to dubious defensive practices, some dream refereeing decisions...

Then the heartland clubs get smashed by a salary cap said to impose evenness on the competition, which actually gives Brisbane a big advantage, and which the Storm don't have any regard for. Both clubs somehow manage to continue to provide the vast majority of the rep players through the salary cap era.

To me nothing summed up what a blight on rugby leave the Storm are than being at the grand final las year a week after the bulldogs semi.

One game was a full house of seething passion between two arch rivals. Win or lose that game, it was a highlight for me of my time watching league.

The other was a soulless exhibition match in which one set of fans cared, and a few try hard blow INS pretended they cared. When Molly Meldrum
ran on to the ground at the end of the game it summed it all up for me.

Our whole competition and this great game have been hijacked and we've all been played for a number of years.

Bigfella what the hell. You just said that Storm fans are try-hard blow-ins that pretend they care about League, shut up. Go tell them that. Why would they pay good money to go to a Grand Final so they can pretend that they care? Cut your foolish ways big fellow!

One of the worst posts ever Bigfella:thumbd::crazy::lol::lol::lol:

That depends,

Considering there are a number of players that are finishing in 2012 after the results of the TV deal are known, I am not to sure how many Storm players and their 6%ers would feel about extending contract to take 2 or 3 more years to get their $600,000 will go down. Either way that is also at the discretion of the NRL and the NRL said they have done that for some other clubs recently and would only do that for players at the storm if the circumstances were similar to those done at other clubs.

The other thing is if these players leave, if they don't leave for the full "rack rate" the Storm will have to supplement their income to that level.

I get the feeling that they might lose some of the big 4 out of that, and if so then I think a large number of people will feel that justice has been served.

exactly and it will then test their real loyalty to the storm or to the $$$.

Say Slater is on $600K for 3 more years = $1.8 million.

If the NRL said that he is to extend his contract to 5 years for $1.8 M i.e. $360K per year without an upgrade, would he do it?

If Slater left in 2011, and received $500K for 2 years (and 200k for 2 years from the storm), after the 2 years, he could probably demand more. And there might be another increase in the salary cap.

So will he be loyal to the Storm or the almighty $$$, knowing he will be older when he finishes the Storm contract.

I recall the doggies : Anasta, Mason, SBW, O'Meley saying they would stick together. Are any at the Dogs now?

Whether he would do it or not is obsolete.

IF the NRL said he could have that money over a longer period of time then IT IS SUPPORTING THE CHEATING.

Fact is that the Storm cheated to secure these deals. The only way to truly make them 'pay' for that cheating is to make them 'pay' for it. At the agreed rate over the agreed amount of time.

For mine I would like to see clubs who exceed the cap PENALIZED the following year with a cap reduction equal to the amount the broke it by (so if we were $25K over this season, even by a technical breach, we would need to be $25k under the following).
And if this meant cutting players loose, those players would still be paid by the club, but forbidden from playing for them.
