The Hopoate selection makes no sense, the reasoning behinds he's selection is that he's big and can take the early tackle count hit ups, but if you watch his parra games he regularly gets dominated in these tackles. He is on about an even level with johnston on these attributes, johnston is smaller but uses his speed and agility to occasionally poke his head through and get a quick play the ball. Johnston is a better winger in most other areas. If they wanted to pick a powerful winger who can get sets off to a good start they should of picked guys like wighton, uate or mansour. Even Mcmanus would be better at that criteria than Hopoate.
I think Hopoate was originally picked on potential and now that he hasn't reached that potential he is picked solely on being loyal, its a paradox that lead to pearce being constantly picked during the bad years.

Can someone tell me when Hoppa was less than stellar when playing for NSW? The kid has stepped up both times he was selected

I honestly think Arthur has made a huge mistake playing him at fullback. He is a far better centre/winger where his strength gets him over the line

He was ok first time, but average the second and there's no hayne to cover him this year. He's form has dropped dramatically this year as well

Im not bagging his previous performances. But imo playing solidly in your previous 2 appearances at this level doesn't mean you should always be picked. There are flat out better players in better form available. He is not even a real incumbent, he got picked last year due to injury and on reputation alone.

The big question is, has Palmerston North's own Jimmy T ever played a decent game of Origin?

Hoppa will do fine. Doesn't deserve the spot on form, but has performed at this level in the past and has plenty of talent.

I tend to agree...he has done the job a Origin level...he won't win us the game but he won't lose it either.
He is still behind 3 or 4 wingers in my books though.

To me form is just an indicator of how well your team is going and more often then not that tends to be the case. If a certain player is playing crap in a crap team and they get selected in a rep team full of stars, well they'll end up looking like stars.

But in terms of form, the one guy who does concern me is Michael Jennings. His NRL team has been playing pretty well and he's just looked crap all season. I thought he'd lift for the Aussies but it looked like he almost didn't want to be there. However I don't question his selection, he's been there before, he's done the job and on his best day is a real game breaker.

I still would pick him but I agree re Jennings, after that test I said he should be flat out dropped, he was f**king walking everywhere. I have no doubt he will lift for origin but it is concerning.

Even though he is massive cheap shot merchant, he has always gone alright at Origin (IIRC?)

Exactly that. He just looked disinterested. Maybe he's carrying an injury or something?

If NSW don't win game 1, I really hope Daley has the guts to pull out the axe. Hoppa has been down in form but he was chosen because he's done the job before, anything less I'd cut him. Pearce has been chance after chance, if he doesn't fire I'd f**k him off for good this time. Corder hasn't managed to step it up to origin level so far, if he doesn't he should be gone. If Jackson and Klemmer are overwhelmed in the origin arena, then I'd be looking to replace them with more experienced players. Tamou should be on his last chance. Jennings should be on a warning.

The players who are new need to prove they deserve to be in the origin arena.

Those picked out of form need to show they can produce what they've produced in the past.

Those that have failed repeatedly should have been f**ked off already.

.

That's how he looked for most of his time at Penrith, it changed when he got to the Roosters he was active defensively and generally more involved in the game but maybe he is reverting back to his old ways.

Well I hope not. He could be wanting to go back to Penrith to link up with his brothers. But shit like that shouldn't affect his game, we don't need sooks like that.
