Breaking Bad

TV seems more tolerant of critically successful but not especially popular shows. Look at the mentioned boardwalk empire. Nobody watches that and it must be ludicrously expensive for hbo who are at beat breaking even on it but they keep it hanging around for the acclaim it attracts.

HBO regrets cutting deadwood and Rome short which became too expensive to justify. With DVD sales poorly rated shows can get a second go. This even applies to network tv. NBC has been absurdly tolerant of parks and rec and community which lets face it rate terribly but they make back money on DVD and give the network a lot of buzz despite community being destroyed by big bang theory repeats

Disagree with that. This year hasn't been so good for movies but it's not over yet. And last year had it's share of good ones.

The quality required for a movie to win an Oscar these days is not even in the same league as what you need to win an Emmy.

There are some decent movies about I suppose, but almost none of it is original content or ideas. Everything is a bloody reboot, re-imagining, or a freaking sequel.

2 years is enough to forgo spoilers.

In the Boardwalk Empire board maybe.

Awards mean nothing and Emmys are among the worst of the lot. The Big Bang Theory gets nominated for best comedy and The Wire never won anything. A lot of awards are decided by which shows/movies/actors/directors the studios want to push for. Every nomination has a campaign by the studio behind it. Who would have thought a movie that involves Hollywood producers helping to save hostages would be so popular with the awards crowd?

The quality in movies have gone down somewhat due to over-reliance on CGI and starpower. They focus so much on making the film look good. TV however rarely has the budget for CGI and has to focus more on plot and character.

And the originality thing is true. And f**king annoying. But it goes for TV as well. How many 'new' cop dramas and family sitcoms do we see every year? Look up the new shows scheduled to debut this season and 90% of it is shit.

I don't know what to do when this is all wrapped up. Might get into dexter again.

Currently downloading the Conan episode where he interviews the entire cast of breaking Bad

Sames, plus I love Conan so win-win.

If anyone's interested in buying some entries to win a trip to watch the final ep with the cast (looks like all proceeds go to charity too):

Wanted the $500 option so bad but just couldn't justify that much money so went with the $100 where you get a shirt. Not bad, and if I win it will be the happiest day of my life.

So entering that competition! Deciding on the $100 or $500 options now.... Having a video of Jesse calling me a bitch would be pretty damned awesome

If I won, I'd load all 5 seasons up onto my ipad and watch them back to back on the flight over, culminating in the finale when I arrive.

I found season one a bit too indulgent for my tastes. Is it worth giving another shot ?

True detective (hbo) looks promising

I love Sorkin, coupled with the fact I'm a US history and politics geek so I was always going to love The Newsroom. But series 2 really kicked it up a notch.

I don't mind the Newsroom (I've only seen season 1), has a bit of a West Wing feel to it. But some of the big dramatic scenes can be a bit overbearing.

Like the scene on the plane when they announce that Bin-Laden has been killed. Was a bit cringe-worthy. Reminded me of when the missus used to make me watch the odd Gray's Anatomy.

I enjoyed the West Wing but I cannot get into The Newsroom. Every character in it is annoying as hell, overly-pretentious, and the writers completely fail to portray as Will McAvoy as a believable Republican.

Season 2 is an improvement. There's a very interesting story arc that goes through the whole season.

However, The romantic angle is kicked up a notch which is a little annoying.

If you're a sorkin fan, you probably have seen Sports Night already.

But if you havent, rush out and get a copy.

Its the Newsroom but about a sports show obviously. It came before the West Wing and imho is one of the best comedy/dramas you'll ever see.

The show only lasted about 40 episodes because sorkin moved on to the west wing.

Watched it live at 11. Sad its over. Predictable ending but still good. I guess coz last 3 episodes have been goat its hard to get everything wrapped up and done. Everything goes walts way and the nit inside me wants to pick at it ie why not check the boot but just amazed at how good the show is. Will splash out the 210 for the barrel.

I think it was very artfully done. The storyline didn't really throw any curveballs, but the cinematography was amazing, and the final scene in the meth lab was just the perfect way to end the series. Pretty much all the loose ends managed to come together.

What an incredible show, I have never seen anything like it and it was unbelievably well made from start to finish.
