Just newly registered, been reading for years. Have to say I have done business with Brian Johnston over the years, he is a well respected and fine businessman. I can't say I am happy with the club or the teams performance, but I can't agree that BJ was not a good choice. He is a fine man.

He has to act for the Board, not as a rogue. So, the collective is failing.

Welcome to the forum mate.
My post was in answer to BJ's record. I have known him to be well respected as well .. Question is how he performs here 2nd time around.

Mark got drunk and headed into full on yobbo mode.

The cops here would have arrested him as well.

Just a bad look when we are busy trying to capture moms.

Reminds me of Barbas bender except the cop wasn’t his wife.

That is good to know & I doubt there is any question of his character. My particular gripe is he has the blinkers on & doesn’t appear geared for a fight to change the position we are currently(& recent history suggests)mired in. I don’t think I’m alone in wanting a leader who says ‘enough is enough, we will make changes, everything is on the table etc. etc.’. Other clubs have done it. Why are we the exception? It’s not like we have been showering in success since 2011.

Mark Coyne voted for the NRL's standown policy. Another player who I really loved when playing for the red V but he lost me when he voted for the stand down policy.

He voted with a knife in his back...why else would they make it a public thing. he was the one and only one against it earlier that the commission had to convince

He is a fine man,but he's fallen into toeing the line of the brotherhood, which is a shame

Welcome Dragonsrock.

Apparently Mary is a fine man too, doesn't mean he can coach.

Likewise for Johnston.

All of Johnston's qualifications are impressive and you sound totally credible when you share your own experiences dealing with this man.
However that just makes Johnston's behaviour and stance vis a vis McGregor even more perplexing because he is not showing any leadership or gumption as CEO of St. George.
On the contrary, he is making lame excuses and tries to defend the indefensible which lacks integrity.
The CEO has an obligation to the Board but he also has an obligation to the other stakeholders of the club.
The biggest volume of stakeholders is the fans.
We the fans, are still waiting for him to stand up and be counted.

Mark stood down when he learnt that most Clubs didnt support him anymore.
He made a mistake, and now has taken the right steps.

I applaud him. And I applaud him on supporting the stand down policy. Whilst not perfect and poorly timed / implemented, its what this code has needed for years.

I have no doubt that the number of serious off field offences have already had an impact on the game at grass roots level. This policy, is a step in the right direction. I am confident that as much as the NRL can be incompetent, they have got this right overall.

The NRL should not have rushed this policy, it should have taken the time to get it right and should never had made it retrospective. I would have respected Mark if he would have taken the time to lobby his collegues to do the above and forefully advocated for the above and then stood down if the NRL ignored him. Instead he stands down because others lose respect for him over a minor incident overseas. I mean Marys DUI would have been a more grave incident and he is still there with the full support of the Board, CEO and most of the media.

Mate, I will respectfully disagree.

The ARL Commissioners role is very much different to that of a club's employee.

Mark is ten times the man Mary could ever be, and has taken the decision to step down for the benefit of the games image, and not go on some crusade to save a few bucks.

One thing I will agree with with is that the stand down policy was rushed through. That doesn't change my opinion on the overall policy. It appears, at least to date, the courts agree with me.

The court based it’s decision on evidence that the NRL clubs (Melbourne Storm) lost valuable sponsorship due to player conduct and therefore the decision to bring in the policy was reasonable to protect the financial value of the product.

The Court of appeal is yet to decide whether the decision was correct.
