The point about playing for your country being an honour is 100% accurate. I do realise though that the huge rep payments were brought in when the big TV money came along as a way to keep our top stars in the game. It was around that time that guys like Folau, Hunt, Burgess and Hayne were leaving for other codes and prior to that we lost Kangaroos such as Rodgers, Sailor and Tuquiri and the Kiwis lost SBW. This is in addition to the countless Superleage players lost to Union.
The admin had to do something to keep the stars in the game. Wtih international competitiveness good at the moment and some good things on the horizon (the continued strengthening of Tonga, PNG, Samoa, Fiji and hopefully France and Wales) it is a great time to look at an international player payment scheme so that all nations can keep their stars in the game and players are paid the same and therefore choose which country their heart really lies with, without being penalised financially for doing so.
I'm happy if the NRL are involved in this but it should be primarily run by the RLIF.
