That's two black marks for Brisbane2. first the Bennet/Meninga faux pas and now this crazy idea. They say bad luck strikes in 3's!

It's a conflict of interest, but a media organisation owning teams is very different to gambling organisations.

Media organisation owning a team i'm fine with. but yet again you miss the point. Our COMPETITION is run by a media organisation. Far worse than a gambling company owning a team.

Gallop impressed with bid's enthusiasm

A second rugby league team in Brisbane is "on the cards" at some point in the future, NRL boss David Gallop has conceded.

Gallop on Monday met with members of a consortium proposing a second side in the Queensland capital if the league expands in 2013 to coincide with a new broadcast deal.

He said the bid was still in its early stages, but the energy of the group, led by former Thoroughbreds chairman Craig Davison, was undeniable.

The Thoroughbreds, a group of Brisbane businessmen, support Brisbane rivals the Broncos.

"It was useful to put a face to the media speculation," Gallop told AAP on Monday evening.

"Expansion is not on the agenda but we have said we expect to review that position in the later half of 2011.

"The strength of the game in Queensland is obvious to everyone but they, like any other potential bid, would need to demonstrate and that they have a sustainable business model and they bring a benefit to the entire competition.

"There's a bit of a way to go but we are happy to continue some dialogue with them.

"They're in the early days but you wouldn't knock their enthusiasm."

But Gallop's comments to reporters at an All Stars community event earlier on Monday would have been music to the consortium's ears.

"The strength of the game in Queensland, the population growth that's expected in South East Queensland, those are factors that would have to say that a second team out of Brisbane at some point would be on the cards," he said.

As well as the consortium from Brisbane, bids have been flagged by Ipswich, Central Queensland, Perth and NSW Central Coast plus, offshore, Wellington and Papua New Guinea.

The NRL has been insistent that any new team would need to grow the game's financial resources so current clubs were not adversely affected.

"It is exciting for the game that there are areas that want to be involved but we have to be careful to look at the impact on the existing 16 clubs and our existing players," Gallop said.

"We want to grow the pie for them and make sure that they're getting paid more money in the future.

"We would be looking at a sustainable business model but we'd also be looking at something that brought something to the table for everyone involved in the competition, something that's going to help the game grow."

Why does he keep putting the "expansion is not on the agenda" line out. If they are reviewing it in 3 months or so, and there are multiple teams organising expansion bids, it clearly is on the agenda.

And what?

Newslimited Rig matches, salary cap limits etc etc because they own half the NRL, the Broncos and the Storm?

Is that what you are implying?

It's ridiculous isn't it. Gallop and NFI.

No, im implying that some situation might eventuate where News might be sitting at the negotiating table with News over something important like television rights. Oh wait, that did f**king happen, and its screwed us over ever since.

Yes, but that conflict of interest is different to the conflict of interest we will be facing of gambling companies owning clubs.

Has Gallop said anything but this for any of the bids? Seems he has been positive about all the bids (not suprisingly) so not sure we can read much into his comments anymore about any of them. Re why is he saying not on agenda, he is avoiding conflict with the clubs, some of who have said no expansion. I am sure when he can present to them that expansion = X amount of extra $'s from TV they will back down and then he will be more sure in his comments. That and it will be the IC's role to decide and there may be legal recourse from bids that are spending money on their bids if he says there will be expansion then the IC turns around and says there won;t be.

I reckon Brisbane Bulls would be a pretty catchy name.

It would be if there wasnt already a QLD BULLS Cricket team.

I reckon they should model themselves on Manchester City - and differentiate themselves from Broncos - ie no rhyming/alliteration.

I.e. go with more something like this.

Brisbane City Stingrays

Jersey/Colours - predominately Blue, V on jersey yellow/maroon, collar yellow/maroon.

THE Brisbane NRL expansion consortium last night scuttled suggestions Centrebet would be offered an ownership stake as the prospective franchise outlined plans for a $10 million sponsorship bank.

The three-man bid team ramped up its campaign to become Brisbane's second NRL team yesterday when delegates Craig Davison, Bill Rae and Nicholas Livermore held preliminary talks with NRL chief executive David Gallop.

A second NRL team in Brisbane is "on the cards" at some point in the future, Gallop said.

The trio spoke for an hour at NRL headquarters in Sydney, with Gallop making it clear the governing body would have "difficulty" accepting a rumoured co-ownership proposal with a leading gaming agency.

But Davison said Centrebet would be viewed only as a potential sponsor.

The Courier-Mail can reveal the Brisbane consortium is in talks with three major corporations and will unveil a series of deals collectively worth several million at a gala announcement on February 21.

Dismissing concerns over the NRL aspirants' potential viability, Davison last night said the Brisbane consortium is on track for $10 million in sponsorship just shy of the $12 million the Broncos generate annually.

"Brisbane have $12 million, Newcastle have $7 million and a number of Sydney clubs have around $9 million, our target will be $10 million and we are more than confident that figure is achievable," Davison said.

"At this early stage of the bid we're very happy with our progress. Centrebet has expressed interest in sponsoring us and we have three other majors that we are talking to.

"The big sponsors might sound nice but it's very important we look at the small to medium businesses and they will be an important part of our club.

"We made it pretty clear to David that our goal is to secure sponsorships and we have a number ready to come on board."

Gallop said: "It was useful to put a face to the media speculation. They were enthusiastic about what a second Brisbane team could bring to the table.

"I explained to them no decision has been taken about expanding the competition, but for some time I had been suggesting the game will look seriously at the issue in the latter half of 2011.

"Clearly with the strength of the game in Queensland and the projected population growth, a second team in Brisbane has a lot going for it.

"It's very early days, but I can't knock their enthusiasm."

Davison said the consortium would not include Centrebet in their ownership structure.

"You never say never in life but our model was for them to be a corporate supporter only, not a co-owner," he said.

Davison said he was satisfied with his meeting with Gallop.

"It was exactly as we expected, David reiterated his stance to us that the NRL will look to make an announcement on expansion sometime this year," he said. "He seemed really excited about the Battle of Brisbane.

That is the one big thing the BNE team has over Ipswich. The ability to attract a HUGE sponsorship base.

Going to be a tough choice for the NRL/ARLC to make...
