I dont know enough about Qld cup teams..

Aside from Easts and Redcliffe, which clubs are financially strong?
The question you ask is pretty much moot, given that only Redcliffe, Easts & Ipswich (last time in conjunction with the Bombers bid, this time seemingly in conjunction with Newtown) have put bids forward.

That indicates to me that either a) no other Brisbane club has the wherewithal to put up an NRL bid or b) if they did, they just have no appetite to bid for an NRL spot.

Didnt the Brothers club also put in a bid?

I'd like to talk through the benefits of Ipswich Jets linking up with Newtown Jets.
From a financial perspective how does this benefit Ipswich's bid to join the NRL? I'm hearing that a union with Newtown will bring in finance via John Singleton, but is that going to a groundbreaking level of finance?
There must be better options on the table for Ipswich. Any suggestions folks?

Yeh Newtown area has basically no juniors
They have no leagues club either
Club has been killed off for over 30 years and other clubs took that area

Singleton is rich but as you say how much he puts in is a question

People think because Pvl wants the bears back he has a hard on for old nswrl clubs … he doesn’t unless they add value which Newtown really don’t

Their jersey is really cool though

Good point, and I'd forgotten about that bid. It didn't really stick around long though, did it?

Wasn't the plan for that to take home games all over Qld too? That kinda takes it away from being a SEQ bid.

Yeh, those bids based on news articles of “we will go to other cities / we will use an old brand / we might sign X player or X coach” are all about using gimmicks to avoid focusing of the for fundamentals of the bid.

Id love to see the Brothers in the NRL. Their brand (along with Diehards and the BRL combined team) would be a great revival.

but that cant be the entire bid…

Ipswich are better off integrating other “nearby” west of Brisbane regions such as Toowoomba and Darling Downs.

These regions have a rich history of rugby league pedigree. Some of Queensland’s biggest companies originated from Toowoomba and therefore there is a commercial/corporate sweet spot which to this day hasn’t really been drawn on by existing South Queensland based clubs.

Population is there as is junior pathways and foundations for infrastructure. They do require more resources ie money to be poured into it to bring it up to speed.

The Jets own their own fields and have a leagues club already. There are also multiple leagues clubs between Ipswich and Roma which could theoretically be incorporated into one larger business however, that would require a bit of negotiating and savvy business people with vision to pull it off. It is in the realm of possibility though.

QRL or at the very least majority of their powerbrokers see Ipswich and out to the west of Brisbane regions as the area they would prefer to be the next cab off the rank as far as potential Queensland based NRL sides are concerned. Again, money to resource it adequately so it can translate these existing foundations into hot commodity is the main factor.

We can bank PNG and we can almost certainly bank Perth. That’s 19 teams. QRL should be working towards one irresistible offering to put on the table. All resources should be put into one bid. Same with NZ. Sadly it doesn’t work that way with all sorts of wacko proposals out there. I still think it’s a leadership issue with the NRL. IMHO they should come out and define exactly what the premiership will look like in 2030 and make it clear half cocked mergers are not on the table. The game needs certainty.

Like you said it unfortunately doesn’t work that way.

However Ben and Brian have reinvigorated the QRL with a zest of energy and business/commercial intelligence that might otherwise not have been there or at least not previously reached its full potential with previous administrators (even if they did try their best with what they had - absolutely no knock on them). It’s just Ben and Brian brought with them a point of difference due to their previous experiences and skills sets.

Ultimately, bids will be proposed, built and submitted via. individual clubs as opposed to the state body but having the state bodies support (whom are already an existing ARLC member) does hold some sort of weight, one can assume anyways.

Looking into the future if we get to 20 teams then I imagine Ipswich could be a standby club for PNG should PNG fail or we see the comp go to 22 teams with Adelaide also included by 2050/60.

Brothers are too alienating to all non-Brothers QLD juniors, and their history is steeped in the Catholic Church. Terrible for corporate branding.

QLD clubs don't need retread Sydney clubs for brand recognition. The Bears thing is clouding people's judgement

I’d like to see..

- 18. Perth 2027
- 19. PNG 2028
- 20. NZ2 2030
- 21. Brisbane3 2032
- 22. Adelaide 2032
- 23. Melbourne2 2038
- 24. NZ3 2038
Teams 18-20 absolutely agree.

not so sure we’ll see any more expansion north of a 20 team competition in the next 20-30 years tbh.

Don’t Newtown jets fans stop Vlandys wherever he goes? lol

Fiji would be dependent on overseas aid just like PNG.
Fiji super rugby side get money off Aussie govt but besides that are making a killing financially

Could work with Tonga and Samoa

Depends of png are hugely successful since then

Can’t see Mel2 being successful unless it’s in Geelong
