Brisbane3 - What is needed to make it a successful bid?

If Ipswich is 25k to 30k, then they should play majority of their home games at the ground, except for Broncos and Dolphins. Ipswich could transfer those two home games to Suncorp.

Not a fan of rectangular sports played on oval grounds. It's up to the oval sports to fill it up with content.
QLD isn't building any non-Olympic stadiums for a while, like maybe a decade of more.

You have to ask yourself if they generate any new fans though, I would argue that Ipswich is Broncos territory right now.

I also think that your emotive discussion around "healing" means nothing in 2025, and only Boomers were around in 88.

Regardless It's not realistic to think the BRL would have survived against the cashed up Sydney teams with or without the Broncos.

Clearly the 2 Brisbane sides are thriving, let's leave them be for at least a decade.
You think the 25k Dolphins fans are all existing Broncos fans? I think some are. I'm a member of both for example. But there is certainly a core Dolphins only fanbase of around 15k. That is new business for the NRL. And whichever way you want to play it, the fact is that on average 25k more tickets are getting sold every fortnight in Brisbane than were before the Phins and 30k new memberships are being sold. No business or sporting organisation is saying no to that.

So what if the Broncos are big in Ipswich, they were probably big in Redcliffe too (probably still are). These are the same tired arguments trotted out against the Dolphins and against a second NZ team. Rivalries fuel interest and growth in the game.

SEQ is a hardcore RL area and is more than big enough to support four team, and the three in the greater Brisbane area will easily all be able to climb over the 25k average attendance mark.

Say you want about the "emotional" argument, I've also put forward a couple of very logical points also. But there is a feel good factor about the Dolphins making it to the NRL and the Jets would be no different. These clubs mean a lot to their communities outside of "boomers".

Also, I've never argued for them to be brought in anytime before 2032 and in my view, preferably as team 21 after Christchurch.

I’ve never really subscribed to this argument. Kids in Ipswich have pathways to the NRL and will be found if they’re good enough, adding an Ipswich team just means they might go through a different system.

In saying that Ipswich, Toowoomba, Tigers etc all already run junior teams in the QLD Comps. Those will probably be improved with some investment with an NRL team at the top but it doesn’t bring many if any new players.

PNG, Christchurch and yes even Perth bring new players in to elitepathways, players that otherwise look elsewhere (Union) or don’t have great access to pathways like PNG historically.

Plenty going for Ipswich to be team 20-21, a near certainty I’d imagine for one of those spots, I just think there are bigger strengths to be selling for their entry.
More local pathways equals more opportunity for more talent to be given an opportunity and inspires more local kids to take up the game in the future. Ipswich is a massive nursery and will benefit the game player-wise way more than a Perth and Adelaide ever will.

I would personally like to see Christchurch as team 20 in 2033 followed by Ipswich as number 21. It is up to Ben Ikin and others involved in Qld rugby league to convince, lobby the Qld govt. and the NRL about Ipswich.
They should lobby for a 40k seat stadium in Ipswich

That would be amazing for the team and the sport

Premier of Brisbane on nine at the moment asked about an nrl side out of Ipswich and said anything that brings economic benefit to the state would be looked at

Also saying magic shouldn’t go anywhere (cough cough Suncorp stadium upgrade)

While positive, they are nothing but sound bites from a politician. Words are meaningless without actions.

By the time Ipswich comes in the roar probably won’t be around so Suncorp could handle another league team

I just think like when the broncos moved to qe2 having a team at the new afl stadium could be a point of difference from the other two teams

I'd be dead against this mate. As soon as we start utilising that oval, we send the wrong message.

The narrative will become that we don't ever need a bigger rectangular stadium because we can just keep upgrading this "amazing" multipurpose stadium to "benefit" all sports and save money.

If Magic is worth $50M a year and Origin is worth God knows how many millions a year, are these events, plus Kangaroos, Matildas, Socceroos and Wallabies providing the events that can fund an upgraded capacity?

Yet here we are facing the prospect of an oval for one fumble team and a handfull of well-attended cricket games every few years as our marquee stadium.
Yep. I personally see this a the NRL's biggest failure in a long time.

I know QLD voted for the LNP and shouldn't be shocked to see them sell off the Gabba for quick buck to developers and then encroach on what little green space we have left to build a new white elephant. Vlandys and Abdo let this one slip through to the keeper and now it'll be an issue for decades to come.

This new stadium will almost certainly guarantee a second Brisbane AFL team and as we've seen with the Lions and Suns they'll be screwing more money from the QLD taxpayer to fund it. Every cent they get is one less spent on sports actually played by Queenslanders. Less money to be spent on upgrading Lang Park, North Ipswich Reserve, Perry Park for football, upgrades for QLD Cup venues like Langland's Park or Dolphin Stadium, and so on.

If afl is stupid enough to put a third side In a state where the sport is struggling the nrl should do all it can to facilitate that

It feels likes the sporting landscape has changed since COVID and the AFL is now the reactive party while the NRL sets the agenda but they still have a lot of hubris. State governments still bend over backwards for their blatantly exaggerated Auskick and 'participation' figures because it means they can tick off projects and look good. It'll take a generation to change that.

I've also got no doubt that while they complained about the Gabba in the press there were promises to have 20+ AFL games a year in the new stadium help justify the spend post-Olympics.

I only hope that the seats in the new stadium are white so the small crowds are easy to see, unlike the current Gabba with the multi-coloured seats that have hidden their awful crowds over the years.

If the next team is indeed Christchurch, we'll be seriously taking AFL on in AFL-land (Melbourne & Perth) & seriously taking on RU in it's stronghold (Auckland, Christchurch). Great times!
