Bulldog Will Hopoate will not play rugby league on Sundays for religious reasons

Won't happen. Belief in some sort of a deity has been an inate part of humanity since the dawn of time.

And sure, religion is responsible for a long list of real shit stuff but it provides billions with meaning and purpose along with support and assistance to the poor and needy and lonely.

Religion is the greatest oppressor of the poor.

Let's look at Christianity for instance. On face value, Christianity is quite positive in terms of the poor but there is a nasty undercurrent, the view that the worse you have it in life the better you have it when you die. If you accept that premise to be true then it would be logical to accept your own suffering in what is a relatively short life in exchange for an eternity of bliss. The problem is that eternity will never come, therefore you have wasted the only life you have.

Wow. I go to the Easter Show and come back to this.

I'm not going to convince anyone of the reasons to believe in a forum post, nor is anyone going to proffer anything to convince me of the opposite.

What concerns me is comments like this from whall15:

but there is a nasty undercurrent, the view that the worse you have it in life the better you have it when you die.

Mate, if you've ever heard/read/seen this, I'd like to know about it. Mostly because it has no basis in Christian belief, the Bible or anything I've ever heard. It's a karma-type scenario, which doesn't mesh with Christianity.

I'm going to bow out of the thread here, no one has anything to gain on either side. If anyone wanted to ask me (genuine) questions, get in touch.

I'm not sure who you quoted but do see his point when lines like this exists in the bible;

'Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.' Mathew 19.24

You can see how this stuff helps keep the masses passive.

Good on Hoppa...

I mean, we don't want to see him burn in eternal hell fire for playing a sport on a day that is named after the Sun as part of Hellenistic astrology.

I hope he refrains from shellfish too.

I am a bit on the fence with this one.

Happy to support Hopoate's convictions (although the LDS are a rort).

Bulldogs should get some compensation out of it though.

We have plenty of Christians in our team and most of our games are on Sunday. I hear they all still manage to get to church.

This is the problem with you religious types, nothing will change your mind no matter what logical arguements are presented.
I would change my mind if sufficient evedence was presented, but I still would not follow cause the God of bible is nothing but a jealous power hungry maniac. The number one thing I did to put me off God was read the entire bible, before that I was more open to the idea.
Why would anyone want God and heaven (which sounds like nothing more than endless worship of God for eternity) to be real.

Either way, this is a thread in the NRL section, and I don't think the existence of God will be proved or disapproved on it.

The whole point of religion and the concept of 'faith' is that it is outside the normal human understanding or logic but you still believe, that is faith.

Anyway I am not religious like that but I don't think worse of people that are. As for Hoppa I would be pissed if it is my team but if they have worked out some kind of compensation then so be it.

stepping away from the religious debate (because, lets face it, if we haven't solved it after thousands of years, countless wars and millions killed over it - we're not going to solve it here on LU...)

the fact of the matter is - probably the in-form player for the team coming 1st on the ladder, says he wants to sit out games, which will most likely weaken the side.

and we have opposition fans up in arms..

am i the only one who sees the humour in that?

And by "Hopoate's convictions", I mean William's, not John's

Laugh it up. This bonehead move by the Dogs has opened the door for more players to pull the same shit!

provided the dogs took this reduced playing time into consideration when deciding on his salary, i don't see the problem with it...

Would you have a problem with the GF being moved to another day to accomodate religious players, cause that's the next step
