Burt signs on again

LUKE Burt, a forgotten man at the Parramatta Eels this year, has sprung up in 2007 coach Michael Hagan's plans after the club re-signed the outside back this week.

But specialist interchange forward Dean Widders is poised to join South Sydney next season after being given permission to negotiate. Eels chief executive Denis Fitzgerald confirmed both developments yesterday as the June 30 anti-tampering deadline draws closer.
Burt, who has played all his career with Parramatta, has been retained for a further two years.
The 25-year-old was dropped to Premier League after round three of this season and has been sidelined with a broken ankle since early last month.
With fullback Wade McKinnon set to leave, Burt could come into contention for that position or on the wing if boom rookie Jarryd Hayne is switched to No. 1.
Burt's goalkicking is an asset, with young centre Brett Delaney having had mixed results since taking over those duties.
As well as McKinnon and Widders, five-eighth/hooker John Morris appears to be on the way out.
Morris, who has expressed disappointment that the club hasn't made him an offer to re-sign, is being chased by Wests Tigers to replace departing halfback Scott Prince.
* AN Eels quartet has made the NSW Residents team to play Queensland Residents in the curtain-raiser to State of Origin III in Melbourne in a fortnight: winger John Williams, second-rower Zeb Taia, prop Josh Cordoba and utility Luke O'Dwyer (interchange).

Where is John Wiliams from??

He spent all his high school days at Marist and went to primary school with some mates im pretty sure they told me.

Burt will be competing with Inu for that Wing spot next season.

Interesting and good to see.

Burt could have had a sook about being dropped and tries to chase a future elsewhere. I think it says a lot about him that he is willing to stick around at the one Club and try to earn his place back in the side. Good Clubman.

That's really surprising considering he was certain to leave at one point, Luke's a stalwart at our club and you can't deny his committment.

Yeah good on him. He's willing to stick around and fight for a position in firsts. I like that type of tenacity.

signed for depth, I would say

Agree, why wouldn't you want Luke in your club as a fallback for an injury to a key player. He can play anywhere in the outside backs and is a gun GK. At the right price he's good value.

"Luke Burt is sh!t. He only gets a game because he is one of Brian Smith's favourites"....

How many times did i hear that tripe on here. Yet we are keeping him.

In two years, how long will that mean Luke has been at the club?

he made his first grade debut in 1999, in 2008 that would be 9 years in the top squad and 11-ish years with the club.

Burty staying  Best news i've heard all day! :D

No i am happy for him to be staying. Just pointing it out to those whingers who have written him off in the past and those who use to blow up at Smith for playing favourites with him when clearly re-signing him suggests Brian Smith and a few staunce supporters aren't the only ones who want him at the club.

Maybe not the time for that old chestnut...

I believe we should have tried harder to sign Williams before we re-signed Burt. He has a lot better try scoring rate and can also be a handy goal kicker. I am sure they would have been asking for similar money.

Oh well good for depth I suppose
